ManipurCrisis – Women’s Groups Intensify Demand for Release of Abducted Civilians

ManipurCrisis –  Security personnel remained stationed around Irawat Bhavan in Imphal on Wednesday as members of the All Manipur Nupi Marup organised a protest march demanding the immediate release of six Naga civilians who were allegedly abducted earlier this month.

The women-led organisation also submitted a memorandum to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, raising concerns over the continuing unrest and security situation in the state. Protesters carried placards and banners urging authorities to take stronger action to prevent further abductions and violence.

Women Protesters Seek Government Intervention

Participants in the rally said the demonstration was intended to draw the attention of state leaders to the hardships faced by ordinary citizens amid the prolonged tensions in Manipur. Security arrangements were tightened in several parts of Imphal during the march to avoid any disruption.

Speaking during the protest, All Manipur Nupi Marup Assistant Secretary Ningthoujam Premila stated that the organisation wanted the government to respond more actively to public concerns. She said residents across the state continue to face uncertainty and fear due to recurring incidents linked to the conflict.

According to the organisers, the memorandum submitted to the Governor highlighted multiple issues affecting communities in the region, including public safety and the need for immediate steps to secure the release of the abducted individuals.

Congress Delegation Approaches Human Rights Commission

On the same day, a delegation headed by Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh met officials of the National Human Rights Commission in New Delhi. The party leaders reportedly submitted a formal complaint concerning the present situation in Manipur and sought intervention over alleged human rights concerns connected to the ongoing crisis.

Singh told reporters after the meeting that the delegation had raised several matters affecting the people of the state and requested the commission to examine them carefully. The Congress leaders did not disclose detailed contents of the complaint but stressed the importance of restoring peace and stability in the region.

Earlier Rally by Naga Peoples Union

The latest protest comes days after the Naga Peoples Union organised a large demonstration in Imphal on Monday demanding the safe return of the six civilians allegedly taken hostage on May 13. Protesters assembled at Tribal Market in New Checkon before proceeding toward Konung Mamang crossing.

Police personnel stopped the march at one point to maintain order, though later a small delegation from the union was permitted to move ahead and submit a memorandum to the state government at the Chief Minister’s Bungalow.

The demonstrators carried signs calling for urgent government intervention and justice for innocent civilians. Many banners appealed for an immediate and peaceful resolution to the issue while condemning violence against non-combatants.

Appeal for Peaceful Resolution

Naga Peoples Union General Secretary HB Kowarhring described the rally as peaceful and non-violent. Addressing reporters during the event, he urged those responsible for the abductions to release the hostages safely and without delay.

He also said the organisation’s primary objective was to pressure authorities into taking swift action to protect civilians and prevent further incidents. Community leaders participating in the march appealed for dialogue and cooperation among all groups involved in the conflict.

Previous Hostage Release Brought Temporary Relief

Earlier this month, a separate hostage-related development had provided temporary relief in the state. On May 15, a total of 28 people were released after both the Kuki and Naga groups freed 14 individuals each. The process was reportedly facilitated through the involvement of the United Naga Council, civil society organisations, and security agencies.

Although that release reduced tensions for a short period, recent protests indicate that concerns over safety and abductions continue to remain a major issue in Manipur. Civil society groups and political organisations have repeatedly urged authorities to strengthen peace efforts and ensure protection for all communities living in the state.
