Politics – Rahul Gandhi Renews Constitution Debate During Rae Bareli Address
Politics Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intensified his criticism of the BJP and RSS during a public gathering in Uttar Pradesh, raising concerns over what he described as growing threats to constitutional principles in the country.
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi sharpened his attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh while addressing supporters in Rae Bareli on Wednesday. During his speech at the Bahujan Swabhiman Sabha, Gandhi accused the ruling establishment of undermining the spirit of the Constitution and urged citizens to actively defend democratic institutions.
Speaking on the second day of his visit to Rae Bareli and Amethi, Gandhi told the audience that the Constitution represents the struggles, sacrifices and aspirations of ordinary Indians. He questioned why people remain silent when, according to him, constitutional ideals are being weakened in public life.
Rahul Gandhi Targets BJP and RSS
The Congress leader intensified his remarks by directly criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the RSS. Gandhi appealed to people to hold those responsible accountable if they believe democratic values are under threat.
He claimed that the Constitution embodies the voice and rights of citizens across social and economic backgrounds. According to Gandhi, protecting constitutional values is not only a political responsibility but also a public duty.
Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi has repeatedly argued that the BJP and RSS are attempting to damage the foundations of the Constitution. The issue has become a central theme in several of his public speeches and campaign appearances across the country.
BJP Responds With Strong Criticism
The BJP reacted sharply to Gandhi’s remarks, with party leaders accusing him of using inflammatory language. BJP president Nitin Nabin described the comments as irresponsible and against the traditions of democratic debate.
Nabin stated that Gandhi’s remarks targeting the Prime Minister and the Home Minister were disrespectful and unacceptable. He further said that such statements insult the mandate given by millions of Indian voters and demanded that the Congress leader issue a public apology.
According to the BJP leader, Indian politics has historically been guided by dialogue, restraint and mutual respect, and he alleged that Gandhi’s speech crossed those boundaries. He also accused the Congress party of attempting to create political divisions for electoral benefit.
Congress and BJP Exchange Political Allegations
The political confrontation quickly escalated, with both parties trading accusations over patriotism and governance. Nabin alleged that the Congress had previously compromised national interests for political gains and questioned the party’s record on issues related to national security and support for armed forces personnel.
The BJP leader further claimed that Congress governments had often prioritised political narratives instead of strengthening public confidence during difficult periods in the country’s history.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also criticised Rahul Gandhi over the speech. Adityanath described the Congress as a party associated with divisive politics and accused its leadership of making statements driven by political frustration.
He termed Gandhi’s remarks objectionable and said they were not in keeping with parliamentary traditions. The Chief Minister also demanded an apology from the Congress MP for his comments against senior leaders of the ruling party.
Constitution Remains Central to Opposition Narrative
The Constitution has emerged as a major political issue in recent months, particularly in opposition campaigns against the BJP-led government. Congress leaders have consistently argued that constitutional institutions and democratic safeguards must be protected from political interference.
On the other hand, BJP leaders have rejected these allegations and accused the opposition of spreading misinformation to create unnecessary political tension. The sharp exchange between the two sides reflects the increasingly aggressive political atmosphere ahead of key electoral battles in several states.
As political rhetoric continues to intensify, debates around constitutional values, democratic institutions and governance are expected to remain at the centre of national political discussions in the coming months.
