WeatherUpdate – Tamil Nadu Rainfall Brings Relief Amid Persistent Summer Heat
WeatherUpdate – After days of scorching temperatures across Tamil Nadu, widespread rainfall in several districts has provided residents with a welcome break from the harsh summer conditions. Cooler temperatures and cloudy skies were reported in multiple regions as rain activity intensified over the weekend.

Weather Systems Influence Rainfall Across the State
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), changing atmospheric conditions over southern India are currently shaping the state’s weather pattern. Officials stated that two active atmospheric circulations are contributing to the ongoing rain activity and are likely to trigger additional showers over the coming days.
One circulation remains active over the Kanyakumari Sea and nearby coastal regions, while another weather system has developed over northeastern parts of Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas. These systems together resulted in significant rainfall in many districts on Sunday.
Krishnagiri and Sivaganga Receive Heavy Showers
Moderate rainfall was reported in Hosur and nearby locations in Krishnagiri district, including Madagiri, Jujuvadi, Begepalli and Bagalur. The showers brought noticeable relief from the rising temperatures experienced over the past several days.
In Sivaganga district, heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds continued for more than an hour in certain areas. Residents experienced a sharp decline in daytime temperatures following the downpour, improving overall weather conditions.
Rain Causes Waterlogging in Hill and Interior Regions
Several areas in Dindigul district, particularly Palani and Kodaikanal, witnessed continuous rainfall for nearly two hours. Due to the intensity of the showers, water stagnation was reported on several roads, affecting local traffic movement.
Nearby districts also recorded steady rainfall activity. Periyakulam and surrounding areas in Theni district received moderate rain for over 30 minutes, adding to the cooler weather pattern across western Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorms Reported in Pudukkottai and Madurai
In Pudukkottai district, thunderstorms and continuous rainfall affected areas including the new bus stand locality, Thiruvappur, Machuvadi, Thirukokarnam, Bose Nagar, Mettupatti and Malayedu. Residents reported cloudy conditions throughout the day along with intermittent rain spells.
Madurai district also witnessed heavy showers in and around Thirumangalam. Localities such as Pandian Nagar, Vadakarai, Chengulam, Karisalpatti and Maravankulam recorded rainfall accompanied by thunder, leading to cooler evening temperatures.
Low-Lying Areas Affected in Nagapattinam
Several places in Nagapattinam district, including Sikkal, Velankanni, Kilvelur, Valivalam and Thirukkuvalai, received substantial rainfall. Water accumulation was reported in low-lying regions following continuous showers in certain pockets of the district.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation as intermittent rainfall is expected to continue in coastal and interior areas.
IMD Forecast Predicts More Rainfall This Week
The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall on Monday in districts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai and Sivaganga.
In addition, strong winds combined with rain are expected in Pudukkottai, Karur, Tiruchy, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts.
The forecast for Tuesday also indicates continued rainfall over the Nilgiris and hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, along with showers in Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts. Chennai is likely to experience moderate rain with isolated thunderstorms in some areas.
Meanwhile, meteorological officials have indicated that the southwest monsoon is expected to make its arrival over Kerala around May 26, marking the beginning of the seasonal monsoon phase in southern India.
