Tourism – Sikkim Marks Statehood Day With Focus on Growth and Harmony
Tourism – Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the people of Sikkim on the occasion of the state’s 51st Statehood Day, praising the Himalayan region for its role in India’s progress and national development. In a message shared on Saturday, the Prime Minister highlighted Sikkim’s achievements in environmental protection, social harmony, and economic growth while assuring continued support from the Central government for the state’s future development plans.

Prime Minister Highlights Sikkim’s Development Journey
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Modi described the Statehood Day celebrations as both joyful and meaningful. He noted that this year’s event carries additional importance as it concludes the year-long observance of Sikkim’s 50 years of statehood within the Indian Union. Sikkim officially became India’s 22nd state in 1975.
The Prime Minister stated that the state has earned admiration across the country for maintaining cultural richness while steadily advancing in areas such as tourism, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. He added that Sikkim’s balanced approach to progress and ecological protection has created a distinct identity for the state.
Memories of Gangtok Visit Recalled
Modi also reflected on his recent visit to Gangtok during the Golden Jubilee celebrations. He said the affection shown by residents during the roadshow and public interactions left a deep impression on him. According to the Prime Minister, the enthusiasm of young people and women in the state demonstrated the spirit and confidence of modern Sikkim.
He further mentioned that the Central government would continue strengthening sports facilities and opportunities for aspiring athletes in the region. Improved infrastructure and youth support programs, he said, remain part of the Centre’s broader vision for northeastern states.
Focus on Sustainability and Organic Farming
The Prime Minister praised Sikkim for becoming a leading example of environmentally responsible development. He noted that the state’s efforts in biodiversity conservation, organic agriculture, cleanliness, and green practices have received national recognition over the years.
He also referred to several welfare schemes implemented in the state, including housing, healthcare, road connectivity, and drinking water projects under Central government initiatives. According to Modi, programs such as Jal Jeevan Mission and PM Awas Yojana have contributed significantly to improving living standards in both urban and rural areas.
Tourism development was another key point highlighted in his message. Modi reaffirmed that schemes like Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD would continue supporting Sikkim’s tourism sector and religious heritage destinations.
Long-Term Vision for Future Progress
Speaking about the future, the Prime Minister said the next 25 years would play an important role in shaping Sikkim’s development path. He added that the state would move toward celebrating 75 years of statehood alongside the centenary of India’s independence in 2047.
Modi stressed the need for a long-term growth strategy centered on the aspirations of local communities. He assured that the Centre would continue working closely with the state government to support development priorities across sectors.
Chief Minister Calls for Unity and Responsibility
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also greeted residents on the occasion and reflected on Sikkim’s transformation over the past five decades. He said the state’s peaceful environment, democratic values, and commitment to social balance continue to inspire the nation.
In a social media message, Tamang highlighted Sikkim’s natural beauty, rich traditions, and the iconic presence of Mount Kanchenjunga. He stated that the state has become widely known for its dedication to organic farming, environmental protection, and sustainable growth.
The Chief Minister added that the anniversary celebrations provided an opportunity for people to look back with pride on Sikkim’s journey since joining the Indian Union. He also urged citizens to strengthen the values of unity, discipline, and responsibility while supporting national interests and public welfare measures.
