Traffic Enforcement – Delhi Airport Roads See Surge in Automated Parking Fines
Traffic Enforcement – Smart traffic monitoring around Delhi airport recorded more than 100 fines within 10 days after authorities introduced an advanced camera-based enforcement system to identify illegally parked vehicles.

Automated Monitoring Begins Near Airport Routes
The Delhi Traffic Police confirmed that over 100 e-challans were issued between May 3 and May 12 to vehicle owners found violating parking rules near the Indira Gandhi International Airport. The enforcement drive is being carried out with the support of newly installed high-tech surveillance systems.
According to officials, the initiative is part of a larger technology-focused traffic management plan launched jointly by the Delhi Traffic Police and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Authorities believe the move will help reduce congestion on major airport approach roads, which frequently experience heavy traffic because of unauthorized parking.
ANPR Cameras Installed at Congestion-Prone Points
The new enforcement mechanism relies on Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras placed across important routes leading to the airport and other nearby traffic-sensitive stretches. These cameras automatically detect vehicle registration numbers and capture violations in real time.
After the cameras identify a potential offence, the details are verified through integrated digital systems before e-challans are sent to registered vehicle owners. Officials stated that the automated system officially became operational on May 3.
Traffic authorities said the use of smart surveillance technology is expected to improve accuracy in identifying violations while reducing dependence on manual enforcement. The system is also intended to ensure quicker processing of penalties and more consistent monitoring around the airport zone.
Officials Expect Reduction in Repeat Violations
Delhi Traffic Police officers said the primary objective of the project is to discourage habitual offenders who regularly ignore parking regulations in busy public areas. Improperly parked vehicles have long been a major cause of traffic bottlenecks around the airport, especially during peak travel hours.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Shobhit Saxena said the introduction of the ANPR-enabled enforcement system would strengthen action against traffic rule violators. He noted that offences are now being electronically recorded and processed with greater efficiency and precision.
Authorities added that the digital enforcement process minimizes the possibility of human error and helps maintain better transparency in issuing penalties. Officials also believe the technology will support smoother traffic movement for passengers travelling to and from the airport.
Technology-Driven Traffic Management Expanding in Delhi
The airport enforcement initiative reflects a broader push toward smarter traffic regulation measures across the national capital. Delhi Police have increasingly relied on digital tools, surveillance systems, and automated monitoring to manage rising vehicle movement in crowded urban areas.
Experts say intelligent traffic systems such as ANPR cameras are becoming common in major cities because they allow quicker identification of violations and improve law enforcement response times. Similar systems are already being used in several metropolitan regions for monitoring speeding, red-light jumping, and unauthorized parking.
With growing passenger traffic at the Delhi airport and increasing pressure on surrounding roads, officials expect technology-assisted monitoring to play a larger role in improving overall traffic discipline in the coming months.
