Politics – Modi Highlights Somnath Reconstruction During Temple Anniversary Event

Politics –  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for the country to move beyond political divisions when dealing with matters linked to national heritage and cultural identity. Speaking at the Somnath Amrut Parv celebration in Gujarat, the Prime Minister said India should protect and restore symbols of national pride without allowing political interests to interfere.

Modi Refers to Somnath Temple Reconstruction

Addressing the gathering marking 75 years since the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple, Modi said several nations across the world have rebuilt sites connected to their historical identity after periods of invasion and destruction. According to him, such efforts usually unite societies, but in India, issues related to heritage and national self-respect often become subjects of political disagreement.

Without directly naming opposition parties initially, the Prime Minister later referred to the opposition faced during the rebuilding of the Somnath Temple after Independence. He recalled the role played by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and India’s first President Dr Rajendra Prasad in restoring the temple.

Modi stated that despite resistance at the time, the leaders involved in the project remained determined to complete the reconstruction work. He claimed the revival of the temple helped the country overcome what he described as the burden of historical humiliation.

Opposition and Appeasement Politics Mentioned

During his speech, Modi also criticised what he termed as “appeasement politics,” saying certain groups continue to place political considerations above national pride. He argued that similar opposition was witnessed during the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

The Prime Minister urged citizens to remain cautious of divisive political thinking and stressed the importance of balancing development with cultural preservation. According to him, India’s progress should include both economic growth and the protection of historical traditions.

He said the country must move forward collectively instead of allowing ideological differences to weaken efforts connected to heritage restoration and national identity.

Devotional Atmosphere at Somnath Celebrations

Before attending the event, Modi held a roadshow and visited the Somnath Temple, where large crowds gathered to welcome him. Reflecting on his experience, the Prime Minister described the atmosphere at the temple as deeply spiritual and emotionally moving.

He said the energy and devotion displayed by worshippers along the route to the temple created a memorable experience for him. Modi also mentioned that the celebrations reminded him of the historic reopening of the reconstructed temple decades ago.

The Prime Minister noted that the devotional spirit surrounding the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav had created a unique atmosphere across the temple town. He added that faith and spirituality could be felt in every part of Somnath during the celebrations.

Somnath Event Marks Historic Milestone

The event commemorated 75 years since the reconstructed Somnath Temple was opened to devotees. Modi described the occasion as an important chapter in India’s civilisational journey and acknowledged the contribution of countless people associated with preserving the temple’s legacy.

In his remarks, he also expressed gratitude for being present during the anniversary celebrations and praised the continued devotion of worshippers visiting the shrine.

Modi currently serves as the Chairman of the Somnath Trust. Earlier this year, he participated in the Somnath Swabhiman Parv programme held at the temple complex. The event included continuous chanting of the Omkar Mantra along with religious rituals and prayers focused on peace, prosperity, and national well-being.

The Somnath Temple, one of India’s most significant religious sites, has long held historical and cultural importance. Its reconstruction after Independence continues to be viewed as a symbolic moment connected to the country’s cultural revival and post-independence identity.
