PolicyUpdate – PM Modi’s National Self-Reliance Appeal Sparks Political Questions
PolicyUpdate – Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram on Monday raised concerns over what he described as “serious directions” issued by the Prime Minister’s Office and urged the Union government to call a special session of Parliament to clarify the reasons behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent public appeals aimed at strengthening the country during uncertain global conditions.

Congress Seeks Clarification From Government
The Congress leader reacted after a post shared by MyGov on the social media platform X highlighted seven appeals made by the Prime Minister to encourage citizens to support a stronger and more self-dependent India. Questioning the circumstances behind the message, Chidambaram said the government should openly explain the situation that led to such appeals being issued.
He stated that Parliament must be taken into confidence and citizens deserve transparency regarding the challenges that may have prompted the Centre to advise changes in everyday economic behaviour. His remarks triggered political discussion over the broader implications of the Prime Minister’s suggestions.
PM Modi Calls for Responsible Consumption
During an address delivered in Hyderabad on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi urged people to adopt habits that could reduce economic pressure and help the country navigate global disruptions. He linked patriotism not only with national security but also with responsible daily choices that contribute to economic stability.
According to the Prime Minister, citizens can play a significant role in strengthening the country by reducing unnecessary expenses, conserving resources and supporting domestic industries. He said India’s resilience during difficult international circumstances would depend on collective efforts made by ordinary citizens.
Focus on Fuel Savings and Public Transport
Among the major appeals, the Prime Minister encouraged people to cut down fuel consumption by making greater use of metro services, public transport and car-pooling. He also promoted railway freight movement and increased adoption of electric vehicles as part of a broader effort to reduce dependence on imported fuel.
The government’s message came at a time when several countries continue to face supply chain disruptions and rising costs linked to ongoing international conflicts. Officials believe reducing energy consumption could help ease economic pressure while also lowering environmental impact.
Push for Domestic Travel and Swadeshi Products
The Prime Minister also appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary foreign travel, overseas holidays and destination weddings for one year. Instead, he encouraged families to spend within India and support domestic tourism and local businesses.
In addition, Modi urged consumers to prioritise Made-in-India products, including daily-use goods such as footwear, bags and household accessories. The appeal reflected the government’s continued emphasis on promoting local manufacturing and reducing external dependence.
Appeal to Reduce Gold and Oil Consumption
Another key recommendation focused on limiting non-essential gold purchases for the next year. The Prime Minister suggested that controlling such spending could help conserve valuable foreign exchange reserves during uncertain economic conditions.
He also advised families to reduce edible oil consumption, saying the measure would not only support the economy but also improve public health outcomes. The call aligns with ongoing campaigns promoting healthier lifestyles and responsible consumption.
Natural Farming Receives Strong Support
Addressing the farming community, Modi encouraged a transition towards natural farming practices and called for a substantial reduction in the use of chemical inputs. He described farmers as central to both environmental sustainability and long-term economic independence.
The Prime Minister said reducing chemical dependency in agriculture would strengthen soil quality and lower production-related risks over time. He added that sustainable farming practices could play an important role in India’s future growth strategy.
Government Highlights Collective Responsibility
The MyGov message accompanying the Prime Minister’s remarks stressed that collective public participation is necessary to make India stronger and more self-reliant. The post presented the appeals as practical steps citizens can adopt during a period marked by global economic uncertainty.
Concluding his address, Modi said the future strength of the country would emerge from the “micro-efforts” of India’s 1.4 billion people, adding that everyday decisions made by citizens would shape the nation’s long-term progress.
