ThailandParole – Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released from Bangkok’s Klong Prem Central Prison on Monday after authorities approved his parole, allowing him to complete the remaining months of his sentence under supervision.
Public Appearance Outside Bangkok Prison
Thaksin, 76, appeared outside the prison early in the morning, marking his first public moment after leaving custody. Surrounded by relatives and supporters, he briefly acknowledged the crowd before departing in a vehicle for a scheduled meeting with probation officials in Bangkok.
Supporters dressed in red gathered outside the prison compound under heavy police presence. The former leader and his family paused to pay respect to the national flag and thanked those who had waited to welcome him following his release.
Conditions Attached to the Parole Decision
Thailand’s Department of Corrections confirmed that Thaksin was among hundreds of inmates approved for early release during a parole review conducted last month. Officials stated that his age and the limited period remaining on his sentence were major factors in the decision.
Authorities said the former premier must comply with several restrictions during the parole period. These include wearing an electronic monitoring device, regularly reporting to supervising officials, and remaining in Thailand until the sentence officially ends in September.
The parole approval was finalized during a meeting held by the Justice Ministry’s parole committee on April 29, with the release date scheduled for May 11.

Thaksin Shinawatra remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in modern Thai politics. He served as prime minister after securing election victories in 2001 and 2005, building strong support among rural and working-class voters through economic and healthcare reforms.
His second administration ended abruptly after a military coup in 2006. Following growing political tensions and legal battles, Thaksin left Thailand and spent years living overseas in self-imposed exile beginning in 2008.
Despite remaining outside the country for over a decade, his political influence continued through parties and movements linked to his family and allies.
Return to Thailand and Legal Troubles
Thaksin returned to Thailand in August 2023 after years abroad and was immediately taken into custody to serve prison time linked to multiple corruption-related convictions tied to his period in office.
Originally facing an eight-year sentence, he spent less than a full day in prison before being transferred to a police hospital because of reported health complications. Later, his punishment was reduced to one year after a royal clemency decision.
However, the legal controversy surrounding his detention did not end there. In September 2025, Thailand’s Supreme Court ruled that his extended stay at the hospital had been improperly permitted and could not be counted as part of his prison term. Following that decision, he returned to prison custody.

Even after securing parole, Thaksin continues to face another legal challenge connected to allegations of royal defamation. Prosecutors are pursuing an appeal after a lower court previously cleared him over comments made during an interview with foreign media in 2015.
