The Bharatiya Janata Party secured a commanding mandate in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections by winning 207 seats, paving the way for the party’s first government in the state. The result marks a significant political change after years of rule by regional and Left parties.

Senior BJP Leaders Arrive for Oath Ceremony

Several top BJP leaders reached Kolkata ahead of the swearing-in event. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP president JP Nadda, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were among those who arrived in the city on Friday. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha are also expected to attend the ceremony alongside other senior party figures.

The event is being viewed as a landmark moment for the BJP in eastern India, especially in a state where the party had struggled for power for decades.

Amit Shah Announces Legislative Party Leader

Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally declared Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party during a meeting held in Kolkata on Friday. Soon after the announcement, Adhikari visited Governor R N Ravi to stake claim to form the new government in the state.

Senior BJP leaders including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee, and Tapas Roy accompanied him during the visit to the Governor’s residence.

Adhikari Thanks Party Leadership

After being elected as the legislative party leader, Adhikari thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP leadership for placing confidence in him.

Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister-designate said the BJP would work to fulfil promises made during the election campaign. He also highlighted the support he received from party MLAs and described the internal selection process as democratic.

According to Adhikari, the incoming government intends to focus on organisational development and public welfare initiatives across the state.

BJP Leaders Back Adhikari’s Leadership

BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul described Suvendu Adhikari as a suitable choice to lead the party in West Bengal. She stated that Adhikari had consistently remained active both inside and outside the Assembly over the last several years and played a major role in strengthening the BJP’s position in the state.

Party workers and supporters have also welcomed the announcement, viewing his appointment as a continuation of the BJP’s aggressive political expansion in Bengal.

Key Electoral Victories Strengthen Position

Suvendu Adhikari emerged as one of the biggest winners of the 2026 Assembly elections after securing victories from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies. In Bhabanipur, he defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.

The BJP’s overall tally of 207 seats sharply contrasted with the Trinamool Congress, which managed to secure 80 seats in the election. The outcome ended the TMC’s 15-year tenure in power and signaled a fresh chapter in Bengal politics.

Political observers believe the results represent another major phase of political change in the state following decades of Left Front governance and later the rise of the Trinamool Congress.
