Politics – Bengal Administration and Film Industry Face Fresh Turmoil
Politics – West Bengal witnessed a series of significant developments involving the state administration, law enforcement agencies, and the regional film industry, reflecting a period of transition and rising tensions in different sectors.

Senior IAS Officer Appointed as Governor’s Secretary
The West Bengal government has appointed senior IAS officer Soumitra Mohan as secretary to Governor RN Ravi. The position had remained vacant after former Governor CV Ananda Bose completed his tenure.
Mohan belongs to the 2002 batch of the Indian Administrative Service and previously handled important responsibilities as principal secretary in the transport and labour departments. Before this appointment, he was serving at Lok Bhaban.
His posting is being viewed as an important administrative decision at a time when the political landscape in Bengal is undergoing major changes following the Assembly election results. Officials familiar with the developments noted that Mohan was among the bureaucrats exempted from transfer by the Election Commission during the recently concluded polls.
The appointment also comes shortly before the expected formation of a new BJP-led government in the state after the party’s strong electoral performance. In another notable development, Advocate General Kishor Dutta has reportedly submitted his resignation, adding to the ongoing administrative reshuffle.
Enforcement Directorate Issues Alert Against Kolkata Police Officer
The Enforcement Directorate has issued a lookout circular against Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in connection with an alleged money laundering investigation.
According to officials, the central agency took the step after the officer allegedly failed to respond to multiple summons notices. The alert has reportedly been circulated across airports, railway stations, and other transit locations to prevent any attempt to leave the country without informing authorities.
Investigators claimed that Biswas had not cooperated with the ongoing probe. Earlier this year, ED officials conducted searches at his residence on Fern Road in Kolkata during the Assembly election period.
The investigation is linked to allegations involving land grabbing and extortion activities. However, no official statement from the officer’s side had been issued at the time of reporting.
Bengali Film Industry Faces Internal Conflict
The Bengali film industry is also witnessing growing unrest as a section of producers and distributors intensified protests against the leadership of the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA).
The protesting members have demanded the resignation of EIMPA chairperson Pia Sengupta and called for the establishment of a fresh screening committee to ensure greater transparency in the organisation’s operations.
Tensions reportedly escalated at the association’s office over the past few days, leading to demonstrations by members of the industry. As part of the protest, participants sprinkled Ganga water around the office premises, describing it as a symbolic purification exercise.
Film distributor Satadeep Saha, who is among those leading the protest, said representatives from both sides are expected to hold discussions on May 8. The meeting is aimed at resolving differences and improving democratic functioning within the organisation.
Industry insiders believe the dispute could affect coordination between producers, distributors, and exhibitors if a resolution is not reached soon. The controversy has also sparked conversations within the Bengali entertainment sector about governance standards and transparency in industry bodies.
