ElectionViolence – Political Clashes Intensify Across Bengal After Vote Results
ElectionViolence – Fresh incidents of violence surfaced in several parts of West Bengal soon after the announcement of election results, raising concerns over law and order in the state. Reports of clashes, vandalism, and alleged attacks emerged from multiple districts as political tensions escalated following the declaration of a decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Rising Tension in Kolkata
An atmosphere of fear spread in Kolkata’s Beliaghata area on Tuesday after the body of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker was discovered near his residence. Family members of the deceased alleged that he was attacked only a few hours after election counting trends confirmed a major win for the BJP on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Biswajit Pattanayak, was known to be associated with the Trinamool Congress at the local level. According to relatives, he was found seriously injured outside his home late Monday night. He was immediately taken to a nearby government hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Authorities later shifted the body to a mortuary for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police officials have not yet released detailed findings regarding the incident.
Allegations Over Political Attacks
The Trinamool Congress accused BJP supporters of carrying out attacks against its workers in different regions of the state. On Tuesday, the party claimed that one of its workers was allegedly killed in Birbhum district’s Nanoor area during political violence that followed the election outcome.
Apart from the reported killing, several party offices linked to the Trinamool Congress were allegedly damaged in parts of Kolkata, including Tollygunge and Kasba. Broken furniture, torn banners, and damaged structures were seen at some locations after groups reportedly gathered and vandalized the offices overnight.
The BJP leadership had earlier appealed to party supporters to maintain peace after the results. However, opposition leaders alleged that violent incidents continued despite these public calls for calm.
Violence Reported Across Several Districts
Political clashes were not limited to Kolkata alone. Similar incidents were reported from Baruipur in South 24 Parganas, Kamarhati in North 24 Parganas, parts of Howrah, and Murshidabad district.
Local residents in some affected areas claimed that groups carrying sticks and bamboo poles moved through neighborhoods, creating panic among political workers and supporters. Police presence was increased in sensitive zones to prevent further escalation.
Officials have not confirmed the total number of injured persons linked to the unrest, but security arrangements were tightened in several districts where tensions remained high throughout Tuesday.
Videos on Social Media Draw Attention
Multiple videos circulating on social media showed violent confrontations involving groups chasing individuals through streets and residential areas. The authenticity of some clips could not be independently verified immediately, but the footage triggered widespread political reactions online.
The Trinamool Congress shared several of these videos on social platform X, accusing BJP supporters of spreading violence after the election outcome. The party described the incidents as dangerous and deeply disturbing for the state’s democratic environment.
Political observers noted that post-election violence has remained a recurring issue in West Bengal politics over the years, particularly during major electoral contests where rivalry between political parties becomes intense.
Call for Peace and Investigation
Amid growing concerns, demands for a fair investigation into the reported incidents have increased. Opposition leaders urged authorities to take strict action against those involved in violence, regardless of political affiliation.
Security agencies are expected to continue monitoring sensitive areas in the coming days to prevent further clashes. Meanwhile, residents in affected districts remain worried as political tensions continue to dominate the atmosphere following the election results.
