Infrastructure – Polavaram Project Work Gains Momentum With Focus on Rehabilitation
Infrastructure – The Andhra Pradesh government has been urged to accelerate ongoing work on the Polavaram irrigation project, placing special emphasis on rehabilitation and resettlement efforts for affected communities.

The directive came during a high-level review meeting held in New Delhi on Friday, where senior officials from the Centre and the State assessed the current status of the project. The discussions highlighted the need to maintain pace not only in construction but also in addressing the human impact of the large-scale infrastructure initiative.
Centre Reviews Progress of Key Irrigation Project
The meeting was jointly led by the Chairman of the Central Water Commission, Kushvinder Vohra, and Pankaj Kumar, Secretary in the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. Senior officials examined multiple aspects of the project, including engineering progress, financial utilisation, and social rehabilitation measures.
Representing Andhra Pradesh, a delegation headed by Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad presented a detailed update. The State team shared information on construction milestones, land acquisition status, and ongoing rehabilitation work. Officials noted that while structural work is advancing, equal attention must be given to resettling displaced families.
Emphasis on Rehabilitation and Resettlement
One of the key takeaways from the meeting was the Centre’s strong push for faster implementation of rehabilitation and resettlement programmes. Authorities stressed that project execution and R&R activities should move in parallel to avoid delays and ensure that affected residents are not left waiting.
Officials acknowledged that progress in resettlement has been steady but indicated that the pace needs to increase. The aim is to provide timely housing, compensation, and basic amenities to displaced families, aligning with policy commitments and reducing social disruption.
Land Acquisition Nearing Completion
According to the State’s presentation, land acquisition for the Polavaram project is almost complete. Only around 30 acres remain to be secured, marking a significant milestone in clearing hurdles for construction work.
Authorities described this near-completion as a crucial step forward, as land-related delays have historically impacted large infrastructure projects. With most of the required land already acquired, the focus is now shifting toward finishing construction and completing associated works efficiently.
Financial Updates and Upcoming Assistance
The Andhra Pradesh delegation also shared details on how funds allocated for the project have been utilised so far. Officials informed the Centre that financial resources have been deployed in line with planned activities.
Importantly, the next tranche of central financial assistance is expected to be released in September. This upcoming funding is anticipated to support continued construction and rehabilitation work, helping maintain momentum on the ground.
Technical Support to Strengthen Execution
During the meeting, WAPCOS, the consultancy firm associated with the project, presented its findings and updates. Following this, it was instructed to extend on-site technical support to assist with construction activities.
Officials believe that enhanced technical supervision will help address engineering challenges more effectively and ensure that the project adheres to quality and safety standards.
Balancing Development and Social Responsibility
The Polavaram project remains one of the most significant irrigation initiatives in the region, aimed at improving water management and supporting agriculture. However, authorities reiterated that infrastructure growth must go hand in hand with responsible resettlement practices.
The review concluded with a clear message: while physical progress is essential, timely rehabilitation of affected communities is equally critical. Ensuring both aspects move forward together will be key to the project’s overall success.
