Education – Andhra University Marks 100 Years With Vision for Future Growth
Education – Andhra University completed a significant milestone as it celebrated 100 years of academic contribution, with national and state leaders reflecting on its legacy and outlining plans for its future. The centenary event, held at the university’s Engineering Grounds, brought together policymakers, educators, and distinguished guests to recognise the institution’s role in shaping generations of students and contributing to national development.
A Century of Academic Contribution
Addressing the gathering, Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan described Andhra University as a vibrant space where ideas and leadership have evolved over decades. He noted that reaching the 100-year mark is not just a celebration of longevity but a recognition of consistent academic excellence and societal impact. According to him, the university has not only observed history unfold but has actively influenced it through education and thought leadership.
He also recalled the philosophy of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, stressing that education should nurture both knowledge and values. This balanced approach, he said, continues to hold relevance in today’s rapidly changing world.
Andhra Pradesh’s Emerging Growth Landscape
Highlighting the state’s development, the Vice-President pointed to Andhra Pradesh’s growing importance as a centre for investment and innovation. He mentioned that Visakhapatnam is increasingly gaining attention for its advancements in information technology, digital infrastructure, and data centre development.
He also spoke about Amaravati as the state’s permanent capital, describing it as a symbol of collective ambition and long-term planning. According to him, such clarity in vision is essential for sustained progress.
Drawing an example from sports, he referred to cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, noting that major achievements require patience and persistence. He emphasised that success is rarely immediate and is built through continuous effort.
Financial Support and Development Plans
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu used the occasion to announce a financial allocation of ₹500 crore for Andhra University. He stated that this funding aims to strengthen infrastructure, research capabilities, and global competitiveness.
Naidu highlighted the deep connection between the university’s journey and the state’s development. He recalled that the first Cabinet meeting after the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh was held on the university campus, calling it a guiding force for the state’s progress.
He also pointed to Visakhapatnam’s rise as an international investment destination, mentioning key developments such as the foundation of a major Google data centre, which is expected to boost the region’s technological ecosystem.
Focus on Skills and Global Standards
HRD Minister Nara Lokesh described Andhra University as more than just an educational institution, calling it an emotional cornerstone for many generations. He emphasised its influence across diverse fields, from science to public life.
Lokesh stressed the need to align education with industry demands by reducing the skill gap. He advocated for curriculum updates and increased practical exposure for students, stating that learning should extend beyond classrooms. He also shared the goal of positioning the university among the top-ranked institutions in India.
Message of Perseverance and Discipline
Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, attending as a guest of honour, shared insights from his own career. He spoke about the importance of discipline, patience, and self-belief in achieving success. Tendulkar highlighted that accomplishments come with time and consistent effort, encouraging students to stay focused on their goals.
Distinguished Presence at the Event
The celebration was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Governor Syed Abdul Nazeer, former Vice-President Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, and Odisha Governor Kambhampati Hari Babu. Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion and the institution’s national importance.
