Politics – Contest Intensifies for Delhi BJP Chief After State Polls
Politics – The contest for the top post in the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party is gaining traction as the party awaits the conclusion of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

As the electoral process in West Bengal approaches its final phase, attention within the Bharatiya Janata Party has begun to shift toward leadership decisions in the national capital. Discussions among party members have picked up pace regarding who will lead the Delhi unit in the coming term, with several prominent names being considered.
Key Contenders Emerge for Leadership Role
Internal conversations within the party suggest that New Delhi Municipal Council vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal and Union Minister Harsh Malhotra are among the leading figures in the race. Both leaders are seen as influential within their respective circles and have built strong connections within the party structure.
At the same time, there is a growing view among certain party members that the current Delhi BJP president, Virendra Sachdeva, may continue in his role. Supporters point to his leadership during a period of significant electoral success for the party in the capital.
Sachdeva’s Tenure and Electoral Performance
Virendra Sachdeva recently completed three years as the head of the Delhi BJP, having taken full charge in March 2023 after initially serving as working president from December 2022. According to party rules, a state president can serve a three-year term and may be reappointed once for a consecutive term.
During his tenure, the party achieved a notable victory in the Delhi Assembly elections held earlier this year, winning 48 out of 70 seats. This result marked the party’s return to power in the capital after nearly three decades. In addition, the BJP retained all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi during the 2024 general elections under his leadership, further strengthening his position within the organization.
Decision Likely After West Bengal Poll Results
Party sources indicate that the final decision on the Delhi BJP president will likely be taken after the West Bengal Assembly election results are announced. The second phase of voting is scheduled to conclude soon, with counting expected on 4 May. Senior leaders are expected to review organizational priorities before making an official announcement.
A senior functionary noted that the party’s central leadership will also take into account social and community representation while selecting the next state president. This factor has traditionally played a role in leadership appointments within the party.
Community Representation and Other Names in Consideration
The discussion around potential candidates also reflects considerations of community representation. Kuljeet Chahal belongs to the Jat community, while Virendra Sachdeva and Harsh Malhotra are associated with the Punjabi community. Another name under consideration is Jai Prakash, who comes from the Gujjar community.
Party insiders believe that Chahal’s proximity to the central leadership and his role as national convener of the NaMo app may work in his favor. On the other hand, Harsh Malhotra is seen as having strong ties with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which remains an influential factor within the party ecosystem.
Awaiting Final Call from Central Leadership
With multiple factors at play, including recent electoral performance, organizational experience, and community balance, the decision is expected to be carefully weighed by the party’s top leadership. Until an official announcement is made, speculation is likely to continue within party circles.
