Politics – BJP Pushes Development Agenda as Bengal Poll Campaign Intensifies
Politics – The political atmosphere in West Bengal is witnessing renewed intensity as campaigning gathers momentum ahead of the next phase of assembly elections.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has expressed confidence that public sentiment in West Bengal is increasingly shifting in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking during an interaction, he suggested that the party is aiming to restore the state’s economic and social prominence, which he believes has declined over the years.
BJP Sees Growing Support Across Regions
Rijiju noted that his recent visit to West Bengal involved interactions with local residents and party workers, which, according to him, reflected a noticeable change in public mood. He said that support for the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now visible at the grassroots level.
According to him, many voters feel that the current governance under the Trinamool Congress has not met expectations. He claimed that there is a belief among sections of the electorate that a political shift could bring administrative reforms and development-focused governance.
Focus on Restoring Bengal’s Economic Role
Highlighting the historical importance of West Bengal, Rijiju pointed out that the state once played a leading role in shaping economic and cultural progress in the country. He also mentioned that neighbouring northeastern states had long benefited from Bengal’s economic strength and cultural influence.
He expressed concern that the state’s current economic standing has not kept pace with its past, adding that there is a broader vision to reposition West Bengal as a key driver of national growth. He emphasized that the central leadership aims to transform Kolkata into a modern, forward-looking city while preserving its cultural identity.
Political Context and Past Governance
Rijiju also referred to the state’s political history, stating that West Bengal has been governed by different parties over the decades, including the Congress, Left Front, and the Trinamool Congress. He argued that despite these changes, the state has faced a gradual decline in certain developmental indicators.
He suggested that the BJP’s campaign is centered on addressing these issues and presenting an alternative roadmap focused on economic revival and infrastructure growth.
Debate Over Electoral Roll Revision
Addressing the ongoing debate around the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Rijiju defended the process, stating that it is necessary to maintain the accuracy and credibility of voter lists. He said that removing names of ineligible individuals, including deceased persons or those not legally entitled to vote, is a standard procedure to ensure fair elections.
He questioned the opposition to this exercise, arguing that transparent and updated electoral rolls are essential for democratic processes.
Political Exchanges Heat Up
The campaign has also seen sharp exchanges between leaders. Rijiju responded to recent remarks made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that criticism directed at the Prime Minister often does not resonate well with the public and could influence political perceptions.
Such exchanges have added to the charged political environment as parties intensify their outreach efforts across constituencies.
Election Schedule and Key Dates
West Bengal is currently undergoing a multi-phase election process. The first phase of polling took place on April 23, covering several constituencies. The second phase, involving 142 assembly seats, is scheduled for Wednesday.
The counting of votes and declaration of results are set for May 4, which will determine the political direction of the state for the coming years.
As campaigning continues, all major parties are focusing on consolidating their support bases, making the upcoming phases crucial in shaping the final outcome.
