Elections – Voting Begins for Key Assembly By-Elections Across States
Elections – Voting for several important Assembly by-elections across multiple states commenced on Thursday morning, marking a crucial moment for political parties seeking to strengthen their presence in key constituencies. Polling is underway in constituencies across Karnataka, Nagaland, and Tripura, while a scheduled election in Goa has been cancelled following a court order.

Polling Underway in Karnataka Constituencies
In Karnataka, voters in the Davanagere South and Bagalkot Assembly constituencies began casting their ballots early in the day. Both seats witnessed a direct contest between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with candidates carrying significant political legacies.
The Congress nominated Umesh Meti from Bagalkot, the son of late leader HY Meti, who previously represented the constituency. For Davanagere South, the party fielded Samarth Mallikarjun, whose father currently serves as a minister in the state government.
On the other side, the BJP has put forward Veerabhadrayya Charantimath in Bagalkot and Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa in Davanagere South. These by-elections were necessitated by the passing of sitting legislators, leaving both constituencies vacant and prompting fresh polls.
Contest Intensifies in Nagaland’s Koridang Seat
In Nagaland, polling is taking place in the Koridang Assembly constituency, reserved for Scheduled Tribes. The by-election here has drawn attention due to the involvement of prominent political families.
The Congress candidate, T Chalukumba AO, who had earlier contested the 2023 state elections under a different party banner, is now representing Congress in this contest. He faces Daochier I Imchen, the son of late BJP leader Imkong L Imchen, whose death led to the vacancy of the seat.
Adding to the political dynamics, a BJP State Council member withdrew from the race to support the party’s official candidate, consolidating the party’s position ahead of polling day.
Three-Way Contest in Tripura’s Dharmanagar
In Tripura, the Dharmanagar Assembly constituency is witnessing a multi-cornered contest. The BJP has fielded Jahar Chakraborti, while the Congress has nominated Chayan Bhattacharjee. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has also entered the race with Amitabha Datta as its candidate.
The by-election was called following the demise of Biswa Bandhu Sen, a senior leader who had served as Speaker of the Tripura Assembly and represented the constituency multiple times. His absence has opened the field to a competitive electoral battle among the major political parties.
Goa By-Election Cancelled After Court Decision
While polling was initially scheduled in Goa’s Ponda constituency as well, the process was halted after the Bombay High Court cancelled the by-election. The decision has temporarily put the electoral process on hold in the state, distinguishing it from the ongoing polls elsewhere.
Election Schedule and Upcoming Voting Phases
The Election Commission of India had earlier outlined a broader schedule for by-elections across several states. Apart from the current phase, additional constituencies in Gujarat and Maharashtra are set to go to the polls on April 23. These include Umreth in Gujarat, along with Rahuri and Baramati in Maharashtra.
Counting of votes for all these by-elections is scheduled for May 4, when results will determine how the political landscape shifts in these regions. The outcomes are expected to carry significance not only at the state level but also in shaping broader political narratives ahead of future elections.
Voter Turnout and Political Significance
As polling progresses, voter turnout will be closely monitored, particularly in constituencies where sympathy factors and political legacies play a role. By-elections often serve as indicators of public sentiment between general elections, offering insights into the performance and popularity of ruling parties and opposition groups alike.
With multiple parties fielding strong candidates and local issues influencing voter decisions, these by-elections are set to provide important signals about the evolving political climate across different regions of the country.
