Elections – BJP Moves to Strengthen Coordination Ahead of UP Polls

Elections – With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching next year, signs of heightened political activity are becoming increasingly visible across parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s central leadership has reportedly taken a more active role in ensuring smoother coordination between the state government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the party’s organisational structure in Uttar Pradesh.

Efforts to Improve Internal Coordination

According to sources familiar with recent developments, concerns around coordination between the government and the party organisation have been raised multiple times in recent months. These concerns are understood to have originated from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which has consistently emphasised the importance of functional alignment within the party framework.

In response, several rounds of discussions have taken place involving key leaders from both the government and the organisational wing. Uttar Pradesh BJP chief Pankaj Chaudhary and state general secretary (organisation) Dharam Pal Singh have reportedly been holding consultations with the two deputy chief ministers before finalising important decisions. These interactions are aimed at ensuring that governance priorities and political strategies remain aligned as the election season draws closer.

Party insiders suggest that these steps are intended to avoid any disconnect between policy decisions and grassroots-level political messaging. With Uttar Pradesh being politically crucial, the BJP appears keen to present a unified front.

RLD Signals Strategic Intent in Western UP

At the same time, political manoeuvring is also underway among opposition and regional parties. The Rashtriya Lok Dal, led by Jayant Chaudhary, has made a notable move amid an ongoing rivalry between two prominent leaders in western Uttar Pradesh.

The tension between former BJP MP Sanjeev Balyan and former MLA Sangeet Som has drawn attention in recent months. Balyan, who previously represented Muzaffarnagar in the Lok Sabha, and Som, a former MLA from Sardhana, have been at odds since the 2022 Assembly elections. The disagreement reportedly stems from Som attributing his electoral loss in Sardhana to Balyan, highlighting underlying caste dynamics between Thakur and Jat communities.

Amid this backdrop, the RLD is believed to have initiated informal talks with the BJP to explore the possibility of contesting the Sardhana assembly seat in the upcoming elections. This development is being viewed as a calculated attempt by the RLD to strengthen its foothold in western Uttar Pradesh, a region known for its complex political equations.

Observers note that such back-channel discussions, if confirmed, could influence alliance dynamics and candidate selection strategies as parties prepare for a highly competitive electoral contest.

BSP Revives Demand for Separate Western UP State

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has once again brought attention to the long-standing demand for a separate state of Western Uttar Pradesh. Her renewed stance comes at a time when political campaigning is beginning to intensify across the region.

The timing of this demand is noteworthy, as it follows closely on the heels of Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav launching his campaign from Dadri, a key location in western Uttar Pradesh. Political analysts believe that Mayawati’s move is aimed at reinforcing her party’s presence in the region, which has historically been a stronghold for the BSP.

Although Mayawati had expressed support for the creation of a separate western Uttar Pradesh state earlier in 2024, the issue did not feature prominently in her public statements last year. Its re-emergence now suggests a strategic attempt to bring regional aspirations back into the political discourse ahead of the elections.

Western Uttar Pradesh holds significant electoral importance due to its demographic diversity and political sensitivity. By raising the issue of statehood again, the BSP may be seeking to consolidate support among voters who feel that regional development needs more focused attention.

Political Landscape Grows More Competitive

As election preparations gather pace, Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a flurry of political activity across parties. From internal coordination efforts within the BJP to strategic positioning by regional players like the RLD and BSP, the coming months are expected to shape the contours of the electoral battle.

Each move, whether organisational or strategic, reflects the high stakes involved in the upcoming elections. With alliances, rivalries, and regional issues all playing a role, the political landscape in the state is set to become increasingly dynamic.
