Politics – AAP Gains Momentum as Punjab Leaders Switch Allegiance
Politics – In a notable political development in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expanded its base with the induction of several grassroots leaders from rival parties. The move reflects shifting loyalties at the local level ahead of key electoral contests and highlights the party’s continued efforts to consolidate its presence.

Local Leaders from Multiple Parties Join AAP
On Monday, Rajbir Ghuman, Officer on Special Duty to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, facilitated the entry of nearly three dozen village heads and local representatives into AAP. These included sarpanches, panches, and senior members previously associated with the Indian National Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Bharatiya Janata Party.
Among the prominent entrants were Sahib Singh Chhajjalwaddi, who served as Vice President of the Congress’ Scheduled Caste wing in Punjab, and Sarabjit Kaur, District President of the Women’s Congress in Amritsar Rural. Their inclusion, along with several other Congress figures, signals a broader shift within segments of the party’s local leadership.
The induction ceremony was conducted by Rajveer Singh Ghuman, who formally welcomed the leaders into the party fold. The event was also attended by Gagandeep Singh Ahuwalia, Chairman of the Punjab Khadi Welfare Board, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
Leaders Cite Governance and Policies
The newly joined members indicated that their decision was influenced by the governance approach adopted by the Bhagwant Mann-led administration. They pointed to welfare-oriented initiatives and people-centric policies as key reasons for aligning themselves with AAP.
Political observers note that such transitions often reflect both local political calculations and broader perceptions about governance performance. The influx of leaders at the grassroots level may strengthen AAP’s organizational network in rural and semi-urban areas of Punjab.
AAP Announces Star Campaigners for Upcoming Elections
In a separate development, AAP has unveiled its list of star campaigners for the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala and Assam. The announcement outlines the party’s strategy to deploy its top leadership across states where it seeks to expand its footprint.
The list includes party convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who are expected to lead major outreach efforts. Senior leaders such as Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, and Satyendar Jain have also been named as key campaign figures.
Additionally, Members of Parliament including Sandeep Pathak, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, and Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer are part of the campaign lineup. Their inclusion reflects the party’s attempt to combine political leadership with public figures who hold broader recognition.
Broader Leadership Engagement Across States
AAP has also brought in leaders from different regions to strengthen its campaign. Shelly Oberoi, who oversees party affairs in Kerala, has been listed among the prominent campaigners. Other notable names include former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj, and former ministers Gopal Rai and Imran Hussain.
Leaders from Gujarat, including Isudan Gadhvi and Gopal Italia, are also part of the campaign team, suggesting a coordinated national-level effort by the party.
Elections Scheduled Next Month
The Assembly elections in Kerala and Assam are scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 9. Vote counting will be conducted on May 4, as per the Election Commission’s announced schedule. The Model Code of Conduct is currently in effect, guiding political activities and campaign conduct.
As political parties intensify their preparations, AAP’s recent moves—both in Punjab and at the national campaign level—indicate a focus on strengthening its organizational structure and expanding its electoral reach.
