Delhi – Proposal Emerges to Rename Capital as Indraprastha Again
Delhi – A fresh political debate has surfaced in the national capital, with a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator proposing a change in Delhi’s name to Indraprastha during the ongoing Budget Session of the Legislative Assembly.

Proposal Raised During Assembly Session
The suggestion was put forward by Wazirpur MLA Poonam Sharma through a special mention in the Assembly. She appealed to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to initiate a formal resolution seeking the renaming of Delhi. According to Sharma, once passed by the Assembly, the proposal should be forwarded to the central government for final approval.
She emphasized that such a move would help re-establish a historical connection between the modern capital and its ancient origins.
Emphasis on Cultural and Historical Roots
Sharma argued that the name Indraprastha holds deep cultural and historical relevance, tracing back to references in the Mahabharata. She stated that there is substantial historical and cultural evidence indicating that the region was once known by this ancient name, long before it came to be called Delhi.
According to her, adopting the name Indraprastha would symbolically reconnect the city with its rich past and highlight India’s civilizational heritage on a global stage.
A Step Towards Cultural Renaissance
The BJP legislator described the proposed renaming as more than a symbolic gesture. She termed it a significant step toward what she called a broader cultural renaissance in the country. In her view, restoring historically rooted names can strengthen national identity and pride.
She further added that the name Indraprastha evokes memories of an era when India was often described as a prosperous and flourishing civilization. Bringing back such a name, she suggested, could reinforce cultural recognition both domestically and internationally.
Earlier Demand Raised at National Level
This is not the first time such a proposal has been made. Earlier, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging a similar change. His letter also highlighted the historical significance of Indraprastha and called for restoring the ancient identity of the capital.
The recurrence of this demand indicates a growing interest among certain political leaders in revisiting historical narratives associated with major Indian cities.
Balancing Modern Development and Tradition
While presenting her argument, Sharma also underlined the importance of maintaining a balance between modernization and cultural heritage. She stated that the current government in Delhi aims not only to strengthen infrastructure and urban development but also to preserve and promote traditional values.
She stressed that aligning the city’s identity with its historical roots would complement ongoing development efforts rather than conflict with them.
Broader Implications of the Proposal
The proposal is likely to spark wider discussions across political and public spheres. Renaming a city as prominent as Delhi involves administrative, cultural, and logistical considerations, including changes in official records, institutions, and global recognition.
While supporters see it as a meaningful cultural step, others may view it through practical or political lenses. As of now, no formal resolution has been passed, but the issue is expected to remain part of ongoing debates in the Assembly and beyond.
