Aviation – Government Mandates Free Seat Allocation on Domestic Flights

Aviation – In a move aimed at improving passenger convenience and fairness, the Union civil aviation ministry has instructed airlines to provide at least 60 percent of seats on all domestic flights without any additional charge. The decision comes after growing concerns among travelers over airlines imposing extra fees for seat selection.

The ministry’s directive ensures that a majority of seats on domestic flights will now be available to passengers at no extra cost. This step is expected to reduce the financial burden on travelers who were previously required to pay additional fees simply to secure preferred seating.

Officials indicated that the measure is part of a broader effort to make air travel more accessible and transparent, especially for budget-conscious passengers.

Families and Groups to Be Seated Together

In another important development, airlines have been asked to ensure that passengers booked under the same Passenger Name Record (PNR) are seated together. The ministry emphasized that such travelers should ideally be accommodated in adjacent seats wherever possible.

This directive is particularly beneficial for families, elderly passengers, and groups traveling together, who often face inconvenience when assigned separate seats despite booking under a single reservation.

Clear Rules for Pets and Special Items

The government has also directed airlines to introduce transparent and well-defined policies regarding the carriage of pets on flights. Passengers should be clearly informed about the procedures, costs, and conditions involved in traveling with animals.

Additionally, airlines are required to make the process of carrying sports equipment and musical instruments more straightforward. While ensuring passenger convenience, these policies must still comply with existing safety and operational standards.

Focus on Transparency and Passenger Awareness

The ministry has reiterated the importance of adhering strictly to the passenger rights framework. This includes proper handling of situations such as flight delays, cancellations, and denied boarding.

Airlines have been instructed to prominently display passenger rights across all platforms, including official websites, mobile applications, booking portals, and airport counters. The aim is to ensure that travelers are fully aware of their entitlements and can make informed decisions.
