ElectionSeizure – Authorities Confiscate Undocumented Jewellery and Cash in Tamil Nadu Raids
ElectionSeizure – Authorities in Tamil Nadu carried out a series of inspections on Tuesday, leading to the seizure of high-value jewellery and unaccounted cash across multiple locations. The most significant recovery was reported in Virudhunagar district, where officials intercepted a courier vehicle transporting jewellery worth approximately Rs 14 crore without proper documentation.

Jewellery Seized During Vehicle Check
The operation was conducted by the Static Surveillance Team (SST) during a routine check at Soolakarai. Officials stopped a courier vehicle travelling from Madurai to Nagercoil and discovered a large quantity of gold, silver, platinum, and diamond jewellery. As the consignment lacked valid supporting documents, it was immediately seized.
During the inspection, authorities also found that a gunman accompanying the vehicle was carrying a firearm without obtaining the necessary exemption from relevant authorities. This raised further concerns about compliance with election-related regulations, prompting officials to take appropriate action.
Flying Squads Act on Tip-Off
In a separate development, flying squad teams conducted raids in Madurai district following specific intelligence inputs. Acting on a tip-off, a team led by officials searched a residence in Villur village near Kallikudi, within the Thirumangalam constituency.
During the search, 38 plastic buckets were recovered from the house of a local political functionary. Officials suspect that these items were intended for distribution to voters, which is considered a violation of election guidelines. The seized materials were later handed over to the local administrative office for further action.
Cash Seized From Vehicles During Checks
In another incident on the same day, a surveillance team intercepted a car near ThanakkanKulam on the Madurai–Thirumangalam road. Upon checking the vehicle, officials found Rs 1,30,500 in cash without valid documentation.
The driver, identified as a resident of a nearby area, could not provide satisfactory proof for carrying the money. As a result, the cash was confiscated and handed over to the election authorities for investigation and record.
Multiple Seizures Across Constituencies
Officials reported that similar checks across various constituencies in Madurai district led to several cash seizures. The largest amount, Rs 15.32 lakh, was recovered in the Melur constituency. Other notable recoveries included Rs 5.94 lakh in Madurai Central and Rs 5.80 lakh in Madurai East.
Additional amounts were also seized in different areas, including Rs 1.11 lakh in Madurai South, along with approximately 36.33 litres of liquor. In Sholavandan, Rs 3.61 lakh was confiscated, while Rs 2 lakh was seized in Usilampatti. Authorities also reported smaller recoveries of Rs 1 lakh in Thirumangalam and Rs 77,000 in Madurai North.
Apart from cash, goods valued at around Rs 80,000 were seized in Madurai Central. Officials believe these items may have been intended for distribution to influence voters, which is strictly prohibited under election regulations.
Total Value of Seizures
According to officials, the combined value of cash seized over two days in Madurai district alone reached Rs 35.55 lakh. When including liquor and other confiscated materials, the total value rose to approximately Rs 36.64 lakh.
Authorities stated that all seized items have been brought under the control of the Election Commission. Investigations are ongoing to determine the sources and intended use of the confiscated assets.
Officials emphasized that such enforcement actions are part of intensified monitoring measures to ensure free and fair elections. Regular checks by surveillance teams and flying squads are expected to continue across the region in the coming days
