OldDelhi – The Delhi government has begun a major administrative and development push aimed at revitalizing the historic quarters of the city. During a high-level meeting on Friday, officials decided that the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation will soon receive a new name as part of a broader restructuring effort focused on the preservation and modernization of Old Delhi.
Government Plans Institutional Rebranding
The decision emerged during the 38th board meeting of the redevelopment body, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who also heads the corporation. According to officials present at the meeting, authorities will prepare three alternative names for the organization, arranged in order of preference. After internal review, the government will finalize the new name that best reflects the institution’s renewed purpose.
The renaming is expected to symbolize a shift in the approach toward heritage management and urban redevelopment in the centuries-old Shahjahanabad area. The government believes the move will help reposition the organization and strengthen its mandate to oversee development projects in one of Delhi’s most historically significant districts.
Review of Chandni Chowk Redevelopment
A key agenda item in the meeting was the ongoing redevelopment of the Chandni Chowk corridor. The project covers the stretch from Lal Jain Mandir to Fatehpuri Masjid, one of the busiest and most culturally important market areas in the capital.
Officials reviewed progress made so far and discussed additional steps needed to enhance infrastructure and public facilities along the route. The government intends to ensure that modernization efforts do not disturb the historic character of the area while still improving accessibility and urban amenities for residents and visitors.
Focus on Accountability and Past Operations
During the meeting, participants also examined the functioning of the redevelopment corporation under the previous administration. Concerns were raised regarding possible financial irregularities related to earlier operations.

Major Infrastructure Works Underway
The Delhi government has already initiated several development projects aimed at improving infrastructure in Old Delhi. Authorities confirmed that work worth approximately ₹160 crore is currently underway across 28 roads in the area.
These projects include road reconstruction, improvement of pedestrian pathways, and the beautification of public spaces. Efforts are also being made to upgrade sanitation systems, strengthen waste management operations, and improve the maintenance of public toilets. Cleanliness campaigns are being carried out simultaneously to address long-standing civic challenges in the dense historic district.
Officials say these initiatives are designed not only to improve daily living conditions for residents but also to support tourism and local commerce in the traditional marketplaces of Old Delhi.
Plan for Underground Infrastructure
One of the long-term strategies discussed in the meeting involves gradually shifting overhead wiring underground. Authorities believe this step will significantly improve the visual landscape of Old Delhi while also enhancing safety and service reliability.
The underground cabling plan will be implemented in phases to minimize disruption to businesses and residents. By removing overhead wires and modernizing utilities, the government hopes to introduce contemporary infrastructure without compromising the historic identity of the neighborhood.
Town Hall to Receive Heritage Restoration
Another major initiative highlighted during the meeting is the restoration of the historic Town Hall building. The structure will be developed as a heritage monument and cultural landmark.
Officials believe the project will add to the cultural appeal of the area while preserving an important symbol of Delhi’s architectural and administrative history. Restoration work is expected to follow heritage conservation guidelines to maintain the building’s original design and historical significance.
