A Journey From Mumbai to the United States

Sunil Puri arrived in the United States from India in 1979 when he was just 18 years old. According to Senator Durbin, Puri reached Rockford carrying little more than determination and about $150. His goal at the time was to pursue higher education and build a better future through hard work.

Puri traveled from Mumbai to enroll at Rockford College, now known as Rockford University. Like many immigrants starting life in a new country, he faced financial challenges. To pay for his studies and living expenses, he took on multiple jobs. During this period, Puri worked in demanding roles, including cleaning hospital bedpans and performing manual labor such as concrete work. These early experiences, Durbin noted, reflected his determination to succeed despite obstacles.

Support From the Rockford Community

Durbin emphasized that Puri’s early years in Rockford were shaped not only by his personal dedication but also by the welcoming support he received from the local community. Residents of the city helped him navigate a new environment, offering encouragement and opportunity as he built his life in the United States.

Over time, Puri remained deeply grateful for that support. According to Durbin, he spent decades giving back to the same community that helped him during his early struggles. This commitment to service and community engagement became a defining feature of his life.

Building a Business and Revitalizing the City

After completing his studies with a degree in accounting, Puri went on to establish a real estate development company known as First Rockford Group, later renamed First Midwest Group. The firm eventually became one of the key contributors to redevelopment projects across Rockford.

Under Puri’s leadership, the company focused on restoring neglected and abandoned properties. Many unused buildings were transformed into functional spaces such as restaurants, offices, and industrial facilities. These projects played an important role in revitalizing parts of the city that had previously been overlooked.

Durbin said the company’s investments helped strengthen the regional economy by creating jobs and attracting new business activity. Thousands of people across Illinois benefited from the economic opportunities generated through these redevelopment efforts.

Commitment to Philanthropy and Community Service

Beyond his achievements in business, Puri was widely recognized for his philanthropic work. He frequently spoke about the importance of contributing to the communities where people live and work, a value he said was instilled by his parents.

Guided by this philosophy, Puri donated millions of dollars and dedicated significant time to charitable initiatives in Rockford. His contributions supported several community projects, including the Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza, the southeast Rockford YMCA branch, and the Salvation Army Puri Family Disaster Services Center. These initiatives continue to serve residents and provide vital services across the region.

Strengthening US–India Connections

In addition to his local contributions, Puri also worked to strengthen ties between the United States and India. Senator Durbin described him as a strong supporter of closer relations between the two nations.

Puri participated in official trips to India alongside former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, where he helped promote dialogue and engagement between the countries. His efforts reflected a broader commitment to fostering international understanding while remaining active in civic life in the United States.

Remembering a Lasting Legacy

During his remarks, Durbin said Puri’s life demonstrated how dedication, opportunity, and community support can shape a meaningful legacy. From arriving in America as a young immigrant with limited resources to becoming a prominent business leader and philanthropist, Puri’s story remains closely tied to the development and spirit of Rockford.

His work in business, philanthropy, and civic engagement continues to influence the city and the people who benefited from his vision and generosity.
