Corruption – Tehsildar Arrested After Vigilance Detects Assets Beyond Declared Income
Corruption – Authorities from the state Vigilance Directorate on Thursday arrested Kantapada tehsildar Prasanna Samantaray after investigators concluded that he possessed assets significantly higher than his known and declared sources of income.

Officials said the action followed a detailed investigation in which the officer was unable to satisfactorily explain wealth that allegedly exceeded his legitimate earnings by nearly 80 percent. The arrest came shortly after anti-corruption teams completed extensive searches linked to the government official.
Vigilance Raids Conducted at Multiple Locations
The arrest followed coordinated raids carried out by the Vigilance Directorate a day earlier at seven different properties connected to Samantaray. Investigators searched residences and other locations associated with the officer and his family members.
During these searches, authorities reported discovering both movable and immovable assets valued at several crores of rupees. These included properties and financial holdings allegedly registered in the names of Samantaray and members of his immediate family.
Officials stated that the raids were conducted as part of an ongoing probe into suspected accumulation of wealth beyond lawful income.
Investigation Reveals Large Asset Discrepancy
According to Vigilance officials, investigators carefully examined financial records, property documents, and expenditure details during the inquiry. A comprehensive assessment of Samantaray’s income, spending patterns, and total assets was carried out.
After compiling the information, the agency concluded that the assets linked to the officer were substantially higher than what could reasonably be justified based on his salary and known income sources.
In an official statement, the Vigilance Directorate said that the analysis showed Samantaray was in possession of assets approximately 80 percent higher than his legitimate income. Investigators noted that the officer failed to provide a convincing explanation regarding the origin of the additional wealth.
Legal Action Initiated Against Officer and Family Member
Following the findings, authorities formally placed Samantaray under arrest on charges related to possession of disproportionate assets. The case has been registered under relevant provisions dealing with corruption and illegal accumulation of wealth.
Officials also confirmed that Samantaray’s wife has been named in the case. She has been booked under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to corruption and unlawful financial gains.
The agency stated that the charges were filed based on preliminary evidence gathered during the investigation and the material seized during the raids.
Accused Produced Before Special Court
After his arrest, Samantaray was presented before the Special Court designated for Vigilance cases in Cuttack. Legal procedures in the matter are now underway as investigators continue to examine financial transactions and property records linked to the case.
Authorities said additional evidence may emerge as the investigation progresses, including verification of assets, ownership records, and financial trails connected to the accused.
The Vigilance Directorate also indicated that further questioning and document analysis are being carried out to determine whether additional individuals may have been involved in the alleged accumulation of illegal wealth.
Ongoing Probe Into Asset Ownership
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that more details may be released as the inquiry continues. The agency is currently reviewing documents recovered during the raids and verifying ownership claims associated with the properties identified during the operation.
The case forms part of broader anti corruption efforts aimed at identifying public officials suspected of holding assets that do not match their declared income.
Authorities reiterated that investigations will proceed in accordance with legal procedures and that any conclusions will depend on the outcome of the ongoing probe.
