Cricket – West Indies Secure Commercial Flights After Prolonged ICC Travel Delays

Cricket –  Cricket West Indies has stepped in to organise commercial travel for members of the national squad currently in India after continued delays disrupted the charter flight originally planned by the International Cricket Council. The move came after several days of uncertainty left players and staff waiting for confirmation on their journey home following the completion of their tournament fixtures.

Charter Flight Delays Leave Squad Waiting

According to a statement issued by Cricket West Indies, travel and accommodation for participating teams during major ICC events, including both men’s and women’s World Cups, are generally handled centrally by the governing body. However, the charter aircraft scheduled to carry both the West Indies and South Africa squads encountered repeated delays.

As a result, the West Indies team remained in India for nine days after finishing their matches, awaiting updates on travel arrangements. During this period, players and support staff continued to wait for confirmation on when the charter flight would depart.

Officials said the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the ICC-arranged travel created logistical and personal challenges for members of the team, particularly as they had already completed their commitments in the tournament.

Board Steps In to Arrange Alternative Travel

Cricket West Indies eventually decided that waiting indefinitely for the charter flight was no longer a practical option. In its statement, the board explained that the decision was made with the safety and well-being of players and staff as the primary concern.

The organisation informed the ICC that it would begin arranging commercial travel for the squad instead of relying on the delayed charter service. Efforts were then made through coordination between the board, players, and other partners to secure available airline seats for the group.

These arrangements are being carried out in stages to ensure that all members of the delegation can return home safely.

Players Begin Departing India

Cricket West Indies confirmed that several players and staff members have already left India using the newly arranged commercial flights. The remaining members of the squad are scheduled to depart on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 11 and March 12.

The board noted that arranging travel for a large group during a period of global aviation disruption required careful coordination with airlines and authorities. Despite the difficulties, officials said the priority remained ensuring a safe and smooth return for everyone involved.

Frustration Expressed by Players and Staff

The delay had earlier drawn public reactions from members of the West Indies camp. Head coach Daren Sammy expressed frustration through messages posted on social media platform X, where he highlighted the lack of clear updates regarding travel arrangements.

In one message, Sammy wrote that he simply wanted to return home, while another post questioned the absence of information on when the team would finally be able to depart. His posts reflected the uncertainty experienced by players and staff during the extended wait.

Members of the South African squad who were also affected by the charter delay shared similar concerns online. Several players voiced dissatisfaction about the length of time teams were required to remain in India after their matches had concluded.

Complex Travel Situation Linked to Airspace Restrictions

Cricket West Indies had previously indicated that the situation was complicated by wider international aviation issues. Restrictions affecting airspace in parts of the Gulf region, linked to ongoing security concerns, have made certain flight routes more difficult to coordinate.

The board said it has remained in regular communication with players, team management, and the ICC since the team’s final match against India. Officials emphasised that while the circumstances surrounding international travel remain complex, every precaution is being taken to ensure the safe return of the squad to the Caribbean.

Despite the disruption, Cricket West Indies reiterated its commitment to maintaining the welfare of its players and staff while working closely with tournament organisers to resolve the travel challenges.
