Crime – Impostor in Police Uniform Arrested for Train Thefts
Crime – The Government Railway Police have taken into custody a man accused of carrying out a string of thefts on passenger trains while pretending to be a police officer. Officials confirmed on Monday that the suspect had been evading detection for some time by adopting different disguises during his crimes.

Accused Allegedly Used Multiple Disguises on Trains
According to investigators, the accused, identified as Sanjay Byapari, frequently targeted passengers by blending into the railway environment. At times, he posed as a porter. On other occasions, he acted as a hawker moving through compartments. Most often, however, he wore khaki clothing and introduced himself as a railway police constable.
Police said this tactic allowed him to approach passengers without raising suspicion. By claiming to conduct routine checks, he would examine luggage and quietly remove mobile phones, cash, and other valuables. His ability to appear authoritative reportedly made travelers less likely to question his actions.
Incident on Sealdah-Bound Train Triggered Investigation
The case that led to his arrest began on a Sealdah-bound Balia Express train. A doctor traveling from Bandel station in Hooghly district to Kolkata boarded the train with a bag containing Rs 600 in cash along with important documents, including his MBBS certificate and official work identification.
Soon after boarding, the doctor placed his bag on the berth and settled in for the journey. Investigators said that at Bandel, the accused boarded the same train dressed in khaki attire. Presenting himself as a railway police constable, he began moving through the compartment, keeping a close watch on passengers’ belongings.
Witnesses later told police that he appeared to inspect one or two bags in a manner consistent with security checks. Because he was dressed like a police officer, fellow passengers reportedly did not question his actions.
Bag Stolen, CCTV Footage Reviewed
Taking advantage of the situation, the suspect allegedly removed the doctor’s bag and got off the train at Naihati station. The doctor realized his bag was missing only shortly before reaching Sealdah. Other passengers informed him that the man claiming to be a policeman had disembarked earlier with a bag in hand.
The doctor subsequently lodged a zero FIR with the Sealdah Government Railway Police. The complaint was then forwarded to the Naihati GRP for further action.
Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from Naihati station as part of the probe. According to a GRP official, the footage showed the suspect exiting the station premises while still dressed in a police uniform and carrying the stolen bag.
Arrest Made After Local Search Operation
Based on the visual evidence, police launched a search operation in various parts of Naihati. After combing several locations, officers were able to trace and arrest the suspect.
A GRP official stated that the accused is currently being questioned to determine the full extent of his activities. Authorities are trying to establish how many incidents may be linked to him and whether he operated alone or with accomplices.
Police believe the arrest may help uncover additional cases of theft carried out using similar methods. They have also urged passengers to remain cautious and verify the identity of anyone claiming to conduct official checks during train journeys.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials have indicated that further details may emerge following interrogation.
