Losar – US and Tibetan Leaders Mark New Year Celebrations
Losar – United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday conveyed his greetings to communities observing Losar, the Tibetan New Year, praising the perseverance and strength of Tibetans across the globe.
In a message shared on X, Rubio extended warm wishes to those welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse. He acknowledged the enduring spirit of the Tibetan people, noting that the festival offers an opportunity to recognize their resilience and unity despite ongoing challenges.
Tibetan Leadership Shares Message of Solidarity
A day earlier, Sikyong Penpa Tsering delivered Losar greetings on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration. His message, circulated by the administration, addressed Tibetans both in exile and within Tibet.
Tsering pointed to the difficulties faced by Tibetans living inside Tibet, stating that many continue to endure restrictions under Chinese government policies. According to his remarks, these conditions often prevent individuals from openly expressing their thoughts and feelings, even among close relatives and friends.
He further alleged that efforts are being made to dilute Tibet’s distinct cultural and religious heritage. Tsering said authorities are pursuing policies that impact Tibetan language, faith traditions, and environmental preservation. Despite these pressures, he emphasized that Tibetans inside the region remain steadfast in maintaining their identity and cultural pride.
“We deeply admire their resilience and unwavering spirit,” he said, underscoring what he described as the community’s determination to safeguard its heritage.

In his Losar address, Tsering encouraged Tibetans to move forward with wisdom and collective purpose. He urged the community to dedicate itself to honest and diligent work in the coming year while keeping alive the vision articulated by the Dalai Lama.

Significance of the Three-Day Festival
Losar, one of the most important festivals in Tibetan culture, is observed over three days, though the duration can vary depending on local customs. This year marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse 2153, while the community bids farewell to the Year of the Wood Snake 2152.
The opening day, known as Lama-Losar, is traditionally devoted to family gatherings and visits to monasteries. Devotees pay their respects to spiritual teachers and seek blessings for the year ahead. The emphasis is largely on private observance and familial unity.
The second day, called Gyalpo-Losar, is associated with public celebrations. The term “Gyalpo” translates to “king,” symbolizing authority. On this day, official functions and broader community events are typically organized.
The third day, Chokyong-Losar, centers on honoring guardian deities. Prayer flags are raised on hillsides and around homes, and special prayers are offered seeking protection and well-being for the year to come.
