Congress – BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi Amid Growing Political Strains
Congress – The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday intensified its criticism of the Congress leadership, alleging that the principal opposition party is grappling with increasing dissatisfaction both internally and among its alliance partners. The remarks come at a time when political discussions within the opposition camp have gained momentum following recent statements by senior Congress figures.

Aiyar’s Remarks Spark Fresh Debate
The latest round of exchanges was triggered after veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar publicly distanced himself from Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Aiyar stated that he did not consider himself a follower of Rahul Gandhi’s political line, a comment that quickly drew attention across party circles.
In addition to his remarks on Rahul Gandhi, Aiyar predicted that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan could secure a third consecutive term in office. He also voiced criticism of certain leaders within his own party. These observations have led to renewed conversations about leadership direction and unity within the Congress.
BJP Cites Signs of Internal Dissent
Responding to the developments, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the Congress is witnessing visible signs of unease. Speaking to media outlets, he claimed that dissatisfaction with Rahul Gandhi’s leadership is not confined to a handful of leaders but is being echoed more broadly.
Poonawalla referred to reports suggesting that some senior Congress leaders in Assam are considering leaving the party. He also pointed to political discussions involving the Trinamool Congress, alleging that there have been suggestions within opposition ranks about leadership changes to strengthen the INDIA Bloc.
Concerns Among Alliance Partners
According to the BJP spokesperson, concerns are not limited to one regional party. He alleged that several opposition allies, including the Aam Aadmi Party, DMK, Samajwadi Party and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, have expressed reservations regarding the current direction of leadership.
Poonawalla further cited remarks attributed to Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who reportedly stated that Rahul Gandhi does not adequately consult others. He argued that such comments reflect broader unease within the opposition alliance.
Allegations of Leadership Crisis
The BJP maintained that Rahul Gandhi has struggled to retain the confidence of both party colleagues and alliance partners. Poonawalla said that senior leaders voicing criticism point to a deeper leadership challenge within the Congress.
The Congress has not issued a detailed response to these specific allegations. However, party leaders in the past have reiterated their commitment to collective decision-making and internal dialogue.
Debate Over National Issues
Beyond leadership concerns, the BJP also criticised the Congress over what it described as inconsistencies in its stance on national issues. Poonawalla accused the party of adopting conflicting positions on matters related to nationalism and cultural symbols.
He further referred to political debates in Karnataka regarding reservations and government contracts, arguing that the Congress frames such decisions differently depending on the context. The Congress has previously defended its policies as being in line with constitutional principles and social justice objectives.
Tamil Nadu Alliances in Focus
The BJP also contrasted the National Democratic Alliance with the DMK-Congress partnership in Tamil Nadu. Poonawalla described the NDA as an expanding coalition driven by a clear policy agenda, while alleging that the opposition alliance lacks cohesion.
He pointed to reported tensions over seat-sharing arrangements and leadership roles within the state. Political observers note that alliance negotiations are common ahead of major elections and often involve complex discussions over representation and strategy.
As political activity intensifies across states, the exchange of statements reflects the sharpening of lines ahead of upcoming electoral contests. Whether these public disagreements translate into lasting shifts within the opposition bloc remains to be seen, but the debate has added a new layer to the evolving national political landscape.
