Manipur – BJP MLA Airlifted to Delhi After Violent Attack

Manipur – A senior legislator from Manipur was flown to New Delhi on Sunday for advanced medical evaluation after sustaining serious injuries in what authorities described as a violent assault linked to the state’s ongoing ethnic tensions.

Manipur mla injured

Vungzagin Valte, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Churachandpur, was transported by air ambulance from Imphal. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh was present at the airport to see him off, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the concern within the state leadership.

Family Shares Health Update

Speaking from Churachandpur, Valte’s son, David Mang Valte, said doctors recently identified complications related to his father’s lungs. He described the legislator’s condition as critical but noted that there had been slight stabilization in recent days.

According to him, the injuries were sustained during mob violence amid heightened tensions between communities in the state. “His health remains fragile,” he said, adding that the family is hopeful that specialized treatment in Delhi will aid his recovery.

Circumstances Surrounding the Assault

David Mang Valte also outlined the sequence of events leading up to the attack. He said his father had gone to meet the former Chief Minister during a period of communal strain involving the Kuki, Meitei, and Zomi communities. The incident allegedly occurred while he was returning home, when he was attacked by individuals believed to be associated with Arambai Tenggol.

Authorities have not yet released a detailed public statement regarding the investigation, but the incident has drawn attention amid the broader climate of unrest in Manipur.

Government Calls for Stability

BJP legislator Tongbram Robindro Singh said the newly formed government is prioritizing efforts to restore peace and rebuild trust among communities. He emphasized that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, administrative focus remains on ensuring law and order.

He added that residents across the state are praying for Valte’s swift recovery and expressed confidence that ongoing measures will gradually bring stability back to Manipur.

Long-Running Ethnic Conflict

Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The prolonged conflict has disrupted economic activity, strained social relations, and complicated the political environment.

The crisis has led to displacement, periodic curfews, and the deployment of central forces. While relative calm has returned to some areas at intervals, tensions have persisted in several districts.

Protests Over Deputy Chief Ministers’ Oath

Fresh unrest surfaced recently following the swearing-in of two Deputy Chief Ministers, Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho. The appointments came after the withdrawal of President’s Rule and the formation of the new state government.

Protests were reported in parts of Churachandpur, where sections of the public opposed the inclusion of certain Kuki-Zomi legislators in the state cabinet. Demonstrators gathered in large numbers, voicing demands and expressing dissatisfaction over political developments.

According to local reports, disturbances began in the Tuibong Main Market area on Thursday evening. Protesters attempted to push security personnel back toward their barracks, leading to tense standoffs.

Security Response and Overnight Clashes

As the situation escalated, incidents of stone pelting and tyre burning were reported. Security forces, including personnel from the Assam Rifles, were deployed to manage the crowd and prevent further damage.

Officials from the 27 Sector of Assam Rifles engaged with demonstrators in an attempt to calm tensions, but confrontations continued intermittently. Tear gas was used several times through the night as authorities tried to disperse groups that repeatedly regrouped.

By around 11 pm, security forces conducted a limited baton charge to push back advancing protesters. Despite these efforts, the atmosphere remained tense, with sporadic clashes reported before midnight.

New Leadership Takes Charge

Earlier in the week, Yumnam Khemchand Singh was sworn in as Chief Minister at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Imphal. The oath was administered by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. Senior legislators Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho also took oath as Deputy Chief Ministers, marking the beginning of a new administrative phase in the state.

The transition followed the formal end of President’s Rule, with BJP leaders expressing optimism about restoring governance and rebuilding confidence among communities.

As Manipur navigates this delicate period, political leaders face mounting pressure to address security concerns, promote dialogue, and ensure that incidents like the attack on Valte do not further deepen divisions within the state.
