According to Russian media reports, the meeting will include US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and American entrepreneur Jared Kushner. The announcement comes at a time when global attention remains sharply focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the possibility of renewed dialogue aimed at reducing tensions.

Meeting Plans With US Representatives

Speaking during a session with permanent members of the Russian Security Council, Putin confirmed that the discussions with the US delegation would take place later the same day. He noted that the meeting would follow his scheduled talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Russia’s leading state news agency TASS reported that the Kremlin views the visit as part of broader efforts to maintain diplomatic communication channels with Washington despite deep disagreements over Ukraine.

Focus on Ukrainian Settlement Dialogue

Putin stated that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are expected to visit Moscow to continue discussions related to a possible Ukrainian settlement. The Russian leader suggested that dialogue remains necessary, even as military activity continues on the ground. He also mentioned that he intends to address issues connected to Moscow’s potential involvement in a proposed international initiative known as the Board of Peace, an idea reportedly supported by Trump as a direct platform for conflict resolution.

Background of Previous Engagements

Earlier, Witkoff had publicly confirmed his intention to travel to Moscow, adding that Kushner would accompany him. Kushner was also present during earlier interactions between Russian and US officials, indicating a continuity in informal diplomatic engagement. Prior to their arrival in Russia, Witkoff and Kushner met Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian president’s special representative and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum held on January 20. The closed-door discussions reportedly lasted more than two hours and were described by Witkoff as constructive and positive.

The Proposed Board of Peace Initiative

The Board of Peace concept has been promoted by Trump as a mechanism that could bring world leaders together for direct negotiations, bypassing what he has described as slow and ineffective traditional institutions. According to Trump, existing global bodies have often failed to prevent wars or stop them in time, making alternative diplomatic formats necessary. Putin’s willingness to discuss participation in such a platform suggests that Moscow is at least open to exploring non-traditional diplomatic avenues.

Ukraine’s Skepticism Over Russian Intentions

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed skepticism about Russia’s stated commitment to diplomacy. Addressing the nation, Zelensky argued that if Moscow were genuinely seeking an end to the war, it would prioritize negotiations over missile strikes, energy blackouts, and threats to Ukraine’s nuclear power infrastructure. He claimed that intelligence information indicates Russia has continued reconnaissance of potential targets, signaling that diplomacy is not its primary focus.

Impact on Ukraine’s Energy Sector

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s energy sector remains a consistent target. He stated that nearly 58,000 workers are engaged around the clock in repairing power grids, generation facilities, and heating networks. Additional resources from state-owned enterprises, including Ukrzaliznytsia, have been mobilized to stabilize supplies. In Kyiv alone, where conditions remain particularly challenging, extra repair crews have been deployed from across the country.

Conditions in Affected Regions

According to Zelensky, several homes remain without heating, requiring manual, house-by-house restoration efforts. He highlighted ongoing difficulties in the Kyiv region, especially in northern districts and the Boryspil area. Border and frontline regions such as Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnipro, and Zaporizhia face even greater challenges due to constant shelling. He added that significant stabilization work has also been carried out in Poltava and Odessa.

Ongoing Ukraine–US Coordination

Zelensky further revealed that the Ukrainian delegation, including National Security and Defence Council head Rustem Umerov, has held multiple rounds of discussions with representatives linked to Trump. These negotiations are reportedly focused on drafting documents aimed at ending the war. Zelensky stressed the importance of keeping the American side fully informed about conditions in Ukraine and the continued pressure on its energy infrastructure.
