North Eastern Railway: To reduce passenger confusion, North Eastern Railway will rename its DEMU and MEMU trains as “Intercity.”

North Eastern Railway: The North Eastern Railway’s (NER) Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) and Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains will soon have new designations. Since these trains link cities and usually make a round trip between morning and evening, they will henceforth be referred to as “Intercity” trains. The renaming procedure has already been started by the railway administration, and final approval is anticipated shortly.

Experts claim that the North Eastern Railway now runs eighteen pairs of MEMU trains (including the Bhatni-Ayodhya line) and thirteen pairs of DEMU trains (including the Gorakhpur-Nautanwa route).

Regarding these particular train categories, passengers often experience uncertainty. The railway administration has chosen to reclassify these trains in order to clear up any misunderstanding since they link different cities and towns in the same manner as intercity trains.

The goal of this action is to make local routes more convenient for travelers. Currently, the NER has more than a dozen intercity trains that travel routes including Gorakhpur-Lucknow, Gorakhpur-Varanasi, and Gorakhpur-Chhapra. After the DEMU and MEMU trains are rebranded, there will be a major rise in the number of Intercity trains. Additionally, MEMU trains—renamed Intercity—will basically replace current Passenger and DEMU trains on local lines when the North Eastern Railway is fully electrified.

The Railway Board has been asked to provide more MEMU trains by the NER management. On local lines like Gorakhpur-Deoria-Bhatni-Chhapra, Gorakhpur-Basti-Gonda, Gorakhpur-Kaptanganj-Thawe, Gorakhpur-Anandnagar-Nautanwa, and Gorakhpur-Anandnagar-Barhni, these new trains would be deployed in adequate numbers. These trains are maintained and overhauled at the Gorakhpur Mechanical Workshop and the Aunrihar Shed. Modern LHB coaches are also being introduced.

Enhanced Efficiency and Time Savings
There are many operational benefits of switching to MEMU trains:

MEMU trains go at 100 kilometers per hour.
The train has engines in the front and back.
At terminal stations, there is no need to disconnect or swap engines.

As soon as the trains start, they accelerate quickly.
These characteristics boost the railway line’s capacity and save time.

By using less fuel, the change contributes to environmental preservation.
Only once a week is necessary for maintenance, cleaning, and washing.
