The event happened in a residential building on Gokhale Road, Vijay Manjrekar Marg in Dadar, between November 11 and December 6. The 44-year-old complainant, who trades stocks and diamonds, lives on the second level of the building with his family.

The home hired two domestic staff, Birju Mukhiya and another lady named Kala. During the day, Birju would work, and at night, she would sleep outside the apartment. The complainant claimed that cash and jewelry adorned with gold and diamonds were stored in the third compartment of a bedroom cabinet.

When the family examined the cabinet on November 11, they discovered that all of the jewelry and money were still there. However, jewelry and cash valued at ₹28.20 lakh were discovered missing when the cabinet was re-examined on Saturday, December 6 at about 12.30 pm. Cash valued at ₹1 lakh and jewelry made of gold and diamonds worth ₹27.20 lakh are among the stolen items.

Both domestic workers denied any knowledge of the stolen assets when the complainant questioned them after learning of the crime. Since no strangers had been to the residence at that time, Birju Mukhiya was suspected. Shivaji Park police filed a theft case against him after receiving the allegation.

Following the theft, the accused left the premises and is presently at large. To find and apprehend him, police have started a search operation.
