Shivraj Patil: Shivraj Patil, a veteran Congress politician and former Union Home Minister, died Friday morning in his birthplace in the Latur region of Maharashtra.

Shivraj Patil: A Career in Politics

Throughout his lengthy political career, Patil held a number of important roles. From January 22, 2010, until January 21, 2015, he served as the Governor of Punjab and the Administrator of Chandigarh.

From July 10, 1991, until May 22, 1996, Patil also held the position of 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha. For three long decades, he was a member of the Parliament.

From 1980 till 2004, he served in the Lok Sabha. From his native Latur, Patil won consecutive Lok Sabha elections in 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999. Rupatai Patil Nilangekar, a BJP candidate, defeated him in 2004.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha later that year, which brought him back to Parliament. He also held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha for a little under a year, from March 19, 1990, to March 13, 1991.

He was active in Maharashtra state politics and served as an MLA from Latur city for eight years, from 1972 to 1978, before launching the Center party in Delhi in 1980. He served as the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly’s Speaker and Deputy Speaker during this crucial period.
