Elections – Akhilesh Yadav Promises Annual Support for Women in UP
Elections – Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has announced that if his party forms the government in Uttar Pradesh after the 2027 Assembly elections, economically weaker women will receive an annual financial assistance of Rs 40,000 under a revived pension programme.

Commitment to Strengthening Women’s Financial Security
Addressing party workers and media representatives at the Samajwadi Party office in Lucknow, Yadav said the proposed scheme would aim to improve the financial stability of women from underprivileged backgrounds. He stressed that empowering women economically is essential for building a stronger and more inclusive society.
According to him, the party intends not only to revive earlier welfare initiatives but also to introduce new programmes that directly address the challenges faced by women. These measures, he said, would help increase their independence and participation in decision-making within families and communities.
Revival of Earlier Welfare Initiatives
Yadav highlighted plans to restart several schemes that were introduced during previous Samajwadi Party governments. Among them, he mentioned the Rani Lakshmibai initiative, which was designed to recognise and support women across different sections of society.
He noted that these schemes had earlier contributed to improving the lives of many women and could once again play a significant role if implemented effectively. The party, he added, is working on updating these programmes to ensure they meet current needs and reach the intended beneficiaries.
Focus on Social and Economic Equality
The Samajwadi Party chief emphasised that women form a vital part of the state’s social and economic structure. He said that without their progress, overall development would remain incomplete. Special attention, he added, would be given to women belonging to weaker sections, ensuring they have access to resources, opportunities, and support systems.
Yadav also spoke about plans to introduce initiatives that promote equality in education, employment, and healthcare. He stated that these steps are necessary to bridge existing gaps and provide a level playing field for all.
Criticism of Current Law and Order Situation
During the interaction, Yadav criticised the present government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, alleging that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated. He claimed that incidents of crime have increased and that many citizens, particularly women, feel insecure.
He further alleged that administrative systems are being used for political purposes, which, according to him, has weakened public trust. Referring to recent incidents, he said that meaningful change would require a shift in governance.
Concerns Over Infrastructure Projects
Yadav also raised questions about ongoing infrastructure developments, specifically mentioning the Green Corridor project in Lucknow. He argued that the project lacks proper planning and fails to adequately consider pedestrian safety.
In his view, the same financial resources could have been used more efficiently to improve road quality and expand existing infrastructure. He stressed the importance of designing projects that serve both vehicles and pedestrians in a balanced manner.
Outlook on West Bengal Elections
Commenting on political developments outside Uttar Pradesh, Yadav expressed confidence that Mamata Banerjee would retain power in West Bengal. He stated that despite opposition efforts, public support for her leadership remains strong.
He added that electoral outcomes ultimately depend on people’s trust and satisfaction with governance, suggesting that voter sentiment continues to favour the current leadership in the state.
