Cricket – Rabada’s decisive spell guides Titans past Knight Riders in IPL clash

Cricket – Gujarat Titans secured a significant victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2026, thanks largely to a standout bowling display from Kagiso Rabada.

Rabada spell titans beat kkr

Rabada delivered an impressive performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, finishing with figures of 3 for 29 in his four overs. His contribution proved vital in limiting Kolkata’s scoring opportunities and setting up the win for Gujarat.

Early breakthroughs set the tone

Despite conceding 12 runs in his opening over, Rabada quickly found his rhythm. He struck early by dismissing Angkrish Raghuvanshi, providing his side with an important breakthrough. Soon after, he removed Tim Seifert during the powerplay, further tightening Gujarat’s grip on the match.

His third over was particularly economical, yielding just a single run and increasing pressure on the opposition. Later in the innings, Rabada returned to claim the wicket of Rinku Singh, completing a well-rounded and impactful spell.

Reading pitch conditions proves crucial

Speaking after the match, Rabada highlighted the importance of assessing playing conditions in India. He explained that surfaces can often behave unpredictably, requiring bowlers to adapt quickly.

According to him, while the pitch appeared to be a typical red-soil surface, underlying moisture and uneven bounce made batting more challenging than expected. The new ball, in particular, offered assistance to bowlers, preventing batters from playing freely.

Bounce remains a key strength

Rabada also reflected on how bounce has been a consistent advantage throughout his career. He noted that pitches offering extra lift tend to suit his bowling style, allowing him to extract more from the surface.

He pointed out that different bowlers succeed under different conditions, mentioning that players like Mohammed Siraj rely on their own strengths depending on the pitch. This adaptability, Rabada suggested, is essential in a tournament like the IPL.

Powerplay strategy pays off

Gujarat’s aggressive approach with the ball in the powerplay turned out to be effective. Rabada and Siraj combined to put early pressure on Kolkata’s batting lineup, reducing them to a vulnerable position.

Rabada remarked that while dismissing five wickets in the powerplay would be ideal, even taking three is a strong outcome that can shape the rest of the innings. The early breakthroughs ensured Kolkata never fully recovered.

Team focus remains on winning

When asked about net run rate, Rabada made it clear that the team’s primary objective is to secure victories rather than focus excessively on margins. He emphasized that while net run rate has its importance, it should not overshadow the main goal.

He also stressed the importance of allowing players to operate with freedom. According to him, bowlers and batters should trust each other’s expertise without interfering in each other’s roles.

Chasing advantage and match approach

Rabada acknowledged that chasing totals often provides an advantage in Indian conditions, as defending teams can feel additional pressure. However, he maintained that success ultimately depends on execution rather than whether a team bats or bowls first.

Personal motivation and milestone achievement

After a disrupted previous season, Rabada admitted he is motivated to perform strongly for Gujarat Titans. However, he was careful to distinguish between eagerness and desperation, emphasizing the need for a balanced mindset.

This performance also marked a notable milestone in his career. Rabada has now taken 126 wickets in 89 IPL matches, maintaining an average of 23.19. Against Kolkata Knight Riders alone, he has claimed 15 wickets.

In the broader context of T20 cricket, Rabada’s tally has reached 306 wickets, reinforcing his reputation as one of the leading fast bowlers in the format.
