Cricket – India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has openly criticised the growing influence of social media on modern cricket, describing online platforms as increasingly harmful to players and the sport. He believes that narratives driven by views and engagement often distort reality and create unnecessary pressure on athletes representing the country.
Shielding Players From Online Distractions
According to Gambhir, one of the key factors behind India’s successful campaign in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was the deliberate effort to isolate players from social media during the tournament. The team lifted the title after defeating New Zealand by a convincing 96-run margin in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Speaking about the team’s preparation, Gambhir explained that expectations and constant discussions around performance can distract players. To prevent that, the management worked to limit external influences so the squad could focus fully on cricket during the month-long tournament.
He said the players responded positively to the approach, allowing them to concentrate on their roles without the weight of public commentary and online criticism.
Social Media Criticism Can Affect Performance
Gambhir said modern players face relentless scrutiny on digital platforms, making it difficult to avoid negativity. While athletes attempt to ignore outside noise, he admitted that doing so completely is nearly impossible in today’s environment.
He emphasised that cricketers are human beings who are bound to make mistakes, just like anyone else. The role of a coach, he explained, includes protecting players from excessive criticism so they can continue performing with confidence.
According to him, reducing players’ exposure to online reactions helped maintain their focus and emotional balance during the tournament.
Responsibility Lies With Players and Fans
The Indian coach made it clear that he does not feel answerable to opinions circulating on social media. Instead, he considers himself accountable to the players in the dressing room and to genuine cricket fans who follow the sport out of passion rather than online engagement metrics.
Gambhir said he has no hesitation in admitting when he makes a mistake. In sport, he noted, wrong decisions are inevitable, but what matters most is the intention behind them. Decisions taken with the right motive for the team and the country should be respected even if they do not always produce the desired outcome.
He added that sport involves uncertainty and no individual can claim to make perfect decisions every time.
Focus on Supporting Players, Not Silencing Critics
Gambhir stressed that his role is not to prove critics wrong but to stand behind his players. Building trust within the dressing room, he said, is far more important than responding to public criticism.
He described his approach as straightforward and transparent, explaining that he works without personal agendas. As long as he remains honest with his players and the country, he believes he can accept any result that comes during his tenure as head coach.
For Gambhir, maintaining trust and belief inside the dressing room is the most important responsibility of leadership.

Reflecting on his own playing career, Gambhir said the environment for cricketers has changed dramatically. During his time as a player, criticism mainly came through newspapers and television coverage.
Today, however, digital platforms allow instant reactions from millions of users. He believes this has intensified pressure on players, often creating narratives that may not reflect the actual situation within the team.
Gambhir also expressed concern about content creators who focus on negative commentary to attract attention online. In his view, such discussions sometimes ignore the challenges faced by players representing the country at the highest level.
Gambhir Defends Arshdeep Singh After Final Incident
The coach also addressed an on-field moment involving Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh during the T20 World Cup final. In the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings, Arshdeep threw the ball back toward batter Daryl Mitchell after being hit for two consecutive sixes, and the throw struck Mitchell on the pads.
Although Arshdeep later apologised, the International Cricket Council imposed a 15 percent match fee fine for a Level 1 breach of its Code of Conduct.
Gambhir defended the bowler, saying such moments are part of competitive sport. Bowlers naturally react after being hit for big shots, and displaying aggression while representing the country should not automatically be viewed negatively.
