Wildlife – Teenager Seriously Hurt in Sloth Bear Attack Near Satara Plateau
Wildlife – A 13-year-old boy suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a sloth bear near the Kas plateau region in Maharashtra’s Satara district, prompting concern among residents and forest officials.

The incident took place in Vanjulwadi village, located close to the well-known Kas plateau area. The injured boy, identified as Utkarsh Sanjay Kamble, is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Satara. According to local authorities, his condition has stabilized after emergency medical care.
Boy Went Missing After Leaving Home
Utkarsh, a Class 8 student, had reportedly gone to a privately owned area near the village on Tuesday evening to collect jamun fruits. When he did not return home by night, his family members and villagers became worried and began searching for him.
A search operation was carried out on Wednesday morning by local residents, who later discovered the boy in a severely injured condition. He was immediately taken for medical treatment.
Serious Injuries Reported After Wildlife Encounter
Officials said the teenager sustained deep injuries to his head, face, and stomach during the attack. Preliminary findings suggest that the sloth bear attacked him while he was gathering jamuns in the forested area.
The attack caused panic among nearby villagers, as wildlife movement in the region has occasionally been reported in the past. However, such incidents remain relatively uncommon in the area.
Forest Department Initiates Compensation Process
Satara-Jawali Range Forest Officer Sandeep Jopale stated that the boy is now in stable condition. He also confirmed that a compensation proposal of Rs 5 lakh has been forwarded under the government scheme meant for victims suffering serious injuries caused by wild animals.
Forest officials are continuing to monitor the situation and have advised residents to remain cautious while entering forest-linked zones, especially during evening hours when wildlife activity tends to increase.
Concerns Rise Over Human-Wildlife Encounters
The Kas plateau region and surrounding villages are known for their natural landscape and biodiversity. Wildlife experts say that increasing human activity near forest boundaries can sometimes lead to unexpected encounters between people and wild animals.
Local authorities have urged villagers, particularly children, not to venture alone into isolated areas close to forests. Awareness campaigns regarding wildlife safety are also expected to be strengthened following the incident.
Residents in the region expressed relief after learning that the teenager survived the attack and is responding to treatment. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of safety measures in areas located near wildlife habitats.
