Weather – Dust Storm Followed by Rain Alters Delhi’s Weekend Conditions
Weather – A sudden change in weather patterns brought a mix of dust storms, rainfall, and thunderstorms to the national capital on Friday, offering temporary relief from rising temperatures while also impacting air quality levels across the region.

Sudden Weather Shift Across the Capital
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi witnessed a dust storm in the morning hours, which was later followed by light rainfall and thunderstorms in the evening. Similar weather conditions, including lightning and strong winds, were also reported in nearby areas such as Noida and Gurugram.
The combination of dust-laden winds and rainfall marked a noticeable shift in the city’s weather, which had been relatively stable in recent days. The sudden transition created cooler conditions but also raised concerns related to air pollution.
Temperature Trends Show Slight Dip
On Friday, the maximum temperature in Delhi reached 33.7 degrees Celsius, while the minimum settled at 22.4 degrees Celsius. However, forecasts indicate a drop in temperature over the weekend.
For Saturday, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 29 and 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature could range from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius. The cooler conditions are largely attributed to ongoing atmospheric disturbances affecting the region.
Western Disturbance Driving Weather Changes
The IMD has linked the current weather fluctuations to an active western disturbance impacting northwest India. This system is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall across the region between April 2 and April 5.
Meteorologists suggest that April 4 could witness peak activity, with the possibility of thunderstorms and even isolated hailstorms in some areas. These disturbances have been more frequent and occurring at lower altitudes than usual, which has amplified their impact on Delhi’s weather patterns.
Continued Unusual Weather Since Mid-March
Delhi has been experiencing irregular weather conditions since mid-March, with multiple western disturbances influencing the region. Light rainfall was also recorded earlier in the week, particularly on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
On Tuesday, the minimum temperature dropped to around 19.4 degrees Celsius, indicating a departure from typical seasonal trends. Experts believe that the repeated arrival of these weather systems has contributed to prolonged instability in atmospheric conditions.
Air Quality Deteriorates After Dust Storm
While the rainfall brought temporary relief from heat, it also coincided with a decline in air quality. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 266 at 4 pm on Friday, placing it in the “poor” category, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board.
The classification system defines AQI levels between 201 and 300 as “poor,” which can cause discomfort for sensitive groups. The spike in pollution levels is likely linked to the dust storm, which carried particulate matter across the city.
Outlook for the Coming Days
Weather officials have predicted that Delhi may continue to experience intermittent rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next couple of days. These conditions are expected to persist until the western disturbance gradually weakens.
Residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts, especially due to the possibility of sudden changes such as strong winds or lightning. While temperatures may remain moderate for now, fluctuating conditions could continue to influence both comfort levels and air quality.
