Uttarakhand Chief Minister Highlights Expanding Interest

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has welcomed the growing interest among states in introducing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying the initiative that began in Uttarakhand is now encouraging similar discussions across the country. Speaking to ANI, Dhami recalled that when his government introduced the law, he had predicted that other states would eventually consider following the same path.

According to the Chief Minister, several state governments are now studying the framework developed by Uttarakhand. He also noted that Madhya Pradesh has sought a copy of the state’s UCC draft as part of its own efforts to examine the legal model. Dhami described the development as an indication that the conversation around uniform civil laws is expanding beyond one region.

Focus on Equality and Justice

Dhami maintained that the objective of the Uniform Civil Code is to establish equal legal rights and responsibilities for all citizens rather than targeting any particular religious or social community. He said the proposed legal framework is intended to promote fairness and ensure justice through a common set of civil laws.

The Uttarakhand Chief Minister also pointed out that several countries, including many with Muslim-majority populations, already follow similar legal systems in matters related to civil law. He said India is being closely observed globally as it continues discussions on legal reforms affecting citizens across different communities.

West Bengal Announces Steps Toward UCC

The discussion gained fresh attention after West Bengal’s Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, announced that the state would move forward with the process of implementing the Uniform Civil Code if the appropriate legislative procedures are completed.

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said that a committee headed by a serving inquiry authority has already been formed to examine the matter. He added that further details regarding the proposed framework would be presented in the West Bengal Assembly during Monday’s proceedings.

Adhikari stated that the process would broadly follow the approach adopted in states such as Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam, where discussions and legal procedures have already been undertaken for similar legislation.

What the Uniform Civil Code Proposes

The Uniform Civil Code seeks to introduce a common civil legal structure covering matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession and live-in relationships, regardless of an individual’s religion. The proposal aims to replace separate personal laws governing these issues with a single legal framework applicable to all citizens.

Supporters argue that such legislation would strengthen equality before the law, while critics have raised concerns regarding its impact on religious customs and personal laws. As discussions continue, the proposal remains one of the significant legal and political issues being debated in several states.

The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code was also included among the Bharatiya Janata Party’s major commitments in its election manifesto for the West Bengal Assembly polls. With more states examining the legal framework, the issue is expected to remain an important part of India’s policy and legislative discussions in the coming months.
