TravelSafety – Heavy rain triggered a major rescue effort along the Kedarnath Yatra route after a landslide stranded thousands of pilgrims late Tuesday night.
More than 10,000 pilgrims were safely evacuated after a landslide disrupted the Kedarnath Yatra route in Uttarakhand, prompting an urgent overnight rescue mission led jointly by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The incident took place in the Munkatia stretch between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, where continuous rainfall caused a large section of debris to collapse onto the roadway.
Landslide Cuts Off Key Pilgrimage Corridor
Officials said the landslide struck during the night, blocking movement on one of the busiest sections of the pilgrimage path. Thousands of devotees travelling to and from the Kedarnath temple were left stranded as rocks, mud, and debris covered the road. The worsening weather and darkness added to the difficulty of the situation, raising concerns about the safety of elderly pilgrims and families caught in the area.
According to authorities, the District Control Room in Rudraprayag received an emergency alert around 9:15 pm. Rescue agencies were immediately mobilised after reports confirmed that a large number of pilgrims had become trapped on both sides of the damaged route.
SDRF and NDRF Launch Coordinated Rescue
An SDRF unit headed by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri reached the affected location with emergency rescue tools and protective equipment. Soon after, NDRF personnel joined the operation, allowing both agencies to begin a coordinated evacuation effort despite difficult terrain and poor visibility.
Rescue workers focused on safely guiding pilgrims across the landslide-hit zone while maintaining crowd discipline in the narrow mountain passage. Teams also paid special attention to senior citizens, women, and physically vulnerable travellers during the evacuation process.
Authorities confirmed that nearly 10,450 pilgrims were moved to safer areas through the night operation. Rescue personnel continued working in persistent rain while monitoring the unstable hillside for additional falling debris.
Officials Credit Advance Preparedness
SDRF Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi said the successful evacuation was possible because response teams had already been strategically deployed along the Yatra route ahead of the pilgrimage season.
He stated that disaster response units were prepared for emergencies linked to heavy rainfall and landslides in the Himalayan region. He also noted that quick communication between agencies and rapid field deployment played a crucial role in preventing injuries and larger complications during the incident.
Officials praised the rescue teams for maintaining calm under pressure while handling thousands of stranded pilgrims in challenging weather conditions.
Road Cleared for Traffic by Wednesday Morning
After the evacuation was completed, authorities deployed heavy machines, including JCB excavators, to remove mud and rocks from the blocked road section. Restoration work continued through the night under close supervision from local administration and disaster management officials.
By early Wednesday morning, the route had been reopened for vehicular movement, allowing the pilgrimage traffic to resume gradually. Officials confirmed that movement towards the Kedarnath shrine has restarted, though weather conditions remain under constant monitoring.
Authorities Issue Weather Advisory for Pilgrims
Disaster management officials have advised pilgrims and tourists travelling in Uttarakhand’s hill regions to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season. Frequent rainfall in the Himalayan belt continues to increase the risk of landslides and road blockages along several mountain routes.
An SDRF spokesperson said the operation reflected the commitment and coordination of emergency response teams working in disaster-prone regions. The spokesperson added that cooperation between SDRF and NDRF helped protect thousands of lives during a highly sensitive situation.
Authorities have urged travellers to follow official weather advisories, avoid unnecessary night travel in vulnerable areas, and cooperate with local administration during emergencies.
