TempleDevelopment – Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday visited the historic Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar with his wife to offer prayers on the occasion of Mahashivratri, marking the festival with an important update on the long-awaited redevelopment of the temple’s surrounding area.

Phase One Tender Finalised, Work Set to Begin
Addressing reporters after the पूजा ceremony, the Chief Minister confirmed that the tender process for the first phase of the Lingaraj Temple redevelopment has been completed and groundwork is expected to commence shortly. He noted that a Detailed Project Report for the second phase is also being prepared, indicating a structured and multi-stage approach to the project.
Describing the Ekamra Kshetra as one of India’s prominent Shaivite centres, Majhi said the state government has earmarked Rs 180 crore for the first phase of peripheral development and beautification. The initiative is aimed at improving infrastructure around the temple complex and ensuring better facilities for visitors.
He extended greetings to devotees on the sacred occasion and emphasised the cultural and spiritual importance of the temple, which draws thousands of pilgrims every year.
Financial Outlay Increased for Comprehensive Development
The Chief Minister further stated that since the formation of the current government, a total provision of Rs 330 crore has been made for the broader development of the Lingaraj Temple area. According to him, the funds are intended to streamline the movement of devotees, enhance amenities, and facilitate smoother darshan and rituals within the temple precincts.
He reiterated that the administration is committed to the holistic development of the Ekamra Kshetra, balancing heritage conservation with modern infrastructure needs. The redevelopment project is expected to improve crowd management, sanitation, and access routes without compromising the temple’s historic character.
Economic Vision for Bhubaneswar Region
Beyond the temple project, Majhi also outlined a broader economic vision for Bhubaneswar and adjoining regions. He said the state is witnessing steady growth in the information technology sector and emerging industries such as semiconductors, positioning the capital as a growing IT hub in eastern India.
Referring to the recently approved economic framework for the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack-Puri-Paradip region, the Chief Minister said the Central Cabinet has endorsed plans for a large integrated economic zone. A major component of this development is the proposed Capital Region Ring Road, for which more than Rs 8,000 crore has received approval.
The ring road project is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve regional connectivity, and support industrial expansion across the corridor. Officials believe the enhanced infrastructure will attract investment and generate employment opportunities in the coming years.
Commitment to Growth and Heritage Preservation
Majhi said the temple redevelopment and large-scale infrastructure projects reflect the government’s dual focus on cultural preservation and economic advancement. He expressed confidence that with continued investment and policy support, Bhubaneswar will evolve into a key economic centre in Odisha.
The Chief Minister also linked the state’s development plans to the broader national objective of building a developed India, aligning Odisha’s growth strategy with the vision articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that Odisha aims to play a significant role in driving regional and national progress.
As preparations begin for the first phase of the Lingaraj Temple project, officials indicated that further details regarding timelines and implementation schedules will be shared soon. For now, the announcement on Mahashivratri has signalled a renewed push toward infrastructure development around one of Odisha’s most revered religious landmarks.
