Sustainability – Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Calls for Responsible Resource Use on Earth

Sustainability –   India’s pioneering astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who became the first Indian to visit the International Space Station as part of the Axiom Mission 4, delivered a powerful message on environmental responsibility during the Climate Innovation Summit 2026 held at IIM Bangalore. Drawing from his experiences during a 20-day journey in space, he stressed the urgent need for better resource management and sustainable practices on Earth.

Lessons From Space on Resource Conservation

Launching his address with a ceremonial tree plantation activity, Shukla reflected on the realities of life beyond Earth and how those experiences can reshape humanity’s approach to natural resources. He explained that survival in space depends on efficient recycling systems and careful use of every available resource.

Describing the discipline required aboard a spacecraft, he noted that astronauts must continuously reuse resources that many people on Earth often take for granted. According to him, the space environment leaves no room for waste and demonstrates the importance of respecting every drop of water, every breath of air, and every usable material.

Innovation Driven by Challenging Goals

Shukla said that space exploration often appears unattainable to many people, yet humanity’s determination to overcome such challenges has led to remarkable advances in science and technology. He highlighted that efforts to explore space have contributed significantly to developments in engineering, material sciences, and efficient living systems.

He emphasized that the principles learned in space can help address environmental challenges on Earth. By adopting practices that reduce waste and encourage reuse, societies can move toward a more sustainable future while preserving valuable resources for coming generations.

A Unique Perspective on Planet Earth

Sharing his observations from orbit, Shukla spoke about the emotional impact of viewing Earth from space. He described the planet as exceptionally beautiful and irreplaceable, reminding the audience that no other known world in the galaxy offers the same conditions that support human life.

He expressed concern that despite living on such a remarkable planet, people often fail to appreciate its value and continue to consume resources irresponsibly. Seeing Earth from space, he said, reinforces the importance of protecting the environment and maintaining a sense of responsibility toward future generations who will inherit the planet.

Recognition for Green India Challenge

During the summit, Shukla also praised the Green India Challenge, a citizen-driven environmental initiative led by the Ignited Minds Organisation. The movement has encouraged large-scale public participation in tree plantation efforts and environmental awareness campaigns across the country.

The initiative, supported by former Rajya Sabha member and environmental advocate Joginipally Santosh Kumar, has reportedly inspired millions of citizens to contribute to ecological restoration through tree planting and conservation activities.

Citizens Have a Key Role to Play

Speaking about the movement’s impact, Santosh Kumar said the campaign represents the kind of community-driven responsibility needed to address environmental concerns effectively. He noted that meaningful change begins when individuals take ownership of protecting natural resources within their own communities.

Referring to Shukla’s remarks, Santosh said the astronaut’s journey to the edge of space serves as a reminder that humanity’s most important challenge lies not beyond Earth but in safeguarding the land, water, and air that sustain life. He encouraged citizens to embrace environmentally responsible habits and contribute to a healthier future through everyday actions.

Call for Sustainable Living

Concluding his address, Shukla urged people to adopt sustainability as a part of daily life. He emphasized that preserving Earth’s resources should be viewed as a shared responsibility and that protecting the environment is one of the most significant missions humanity faces today.
