Security – Farooq Abdullah Escapes Gunfire After Attempted Attack at Jammu Event

Security – Veteran political leader Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped harm after a man allegedly attempted to shoot him during a private wedding function in Jammu late Wednesday evening. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, who currently heads the National Conference, said he was safe and credited divine grace for surviving the incident.

Farooq abdullah assassination attempt

Speaking briefly the next morning, Abdullah said he was unharmed and thanked the security personnel who acted quickly. The suspected attacker was reportedly subdued by security staff before any serious injury could occur.

Incident Occurred During Wedding Event

According to officials, the incident took place at a wedding gathering in the Greater Kailash locality on the outskirts of Jammu city. Abdullah had attended the event and was preparing to leave when the situation unfolded.

Authorities said the accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, allegedly approached from behind and attempted to fire a shot at close range. Security personnel stationed with the former chief minister reacted swiftly and managed to intercept the attacker.

Abdullah later described the moment as extremely tense, explaining that the suspect had managed to get dangerously close before being overpowered. His security team quickly escorted him away from the venue and placed him inside his vehicle before moving him to safety.

Security Personnel Acted Within Seconds

Officials familiar with the situation said members of the close protection team, including personnel associated with the National Security Guard security cover, intervened immediately when the attacker attempted to open fire.

The quick reaction prevented the situation from escalating further. Security staff restrained the suspect on the spot while Abdullah was moved out of the area without delay.

Security experts noted that in such high-risk environments, response time from trained protection teams is crucial. In this case, the rapid intervention appears to have prevented what could have become a far more serious incident.

Questions Raised Over Security Arrangements

The incident has triggered fresh debate about security protocols for high-profile leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly those under Z+ category protection. Under this level of security, extensive precautions are normally taken before a protected individual attends a public or private gathering.

Standard procedures generally include advance area checks, strict access control, and multiple layers of protection. The fact that a person allegedly carrying a firearm was able to approach a protected leader so closely has raised concerns among officials and security observers.

While Farooq Abdullah himself chose not to publicly comment on possible lapses in the security setup, the matter has drawn attention within political and administrative circles.

Omar Abdullah Seeks Clarification

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the son of Farooq Abdullah, reacted soon after the incident and expressed concern about how the situation unfolded.

In a message shared on social media, he said that preliminary information suggested the suspect had managed to reach extremely close to the former chief minister before firing a shot. He credited the close protection team for deflecting the attack and ensuring that the attempt failed.

The chief minister also said several important questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding how an individual armed with a weapon could approach someone protected by such a high level of security.

Following the incident, Omar Abdullah travelled to Jammu and went directly to his father’s residence to check on his well-being.

Authorities Begin Security Review

In response to the attempted attack, senior officials have initiated a review of the existing security arrangements for individuals under central government protection in Jammu and Kashmir.

Security agencies are examining whether additional measures are required to prevent similar incidents in the future. Among the steps under consideration are strengthening screening procedures at event venues and upgrading electronic counter-measures used in security convoys.

Officials indicated that further changes may be implemented depending on the outcome of the ongoing security assessment.

Investigations into the motives and background of the suspected attacker are also underway as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
