Security – A late-night explosion near the residence of a senior Congress functionary in Manipur’s Imphal East district has triggered fresh concerns about safety in the region, although no casualties were reported.
The incident took place close to the home of Toijam Lokendro, who serves as chairman of the labour department of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee. According to officials, the blast occurred around 10:30 pm on Tuesday in Kongpal Ningthoubung locality.
Explosion Reported in Residential Area
Authorities confirmed that the explosion happened just outside the gate of Lokendro’s residence. Despite the intensity of the blast, no injuries or damage to life were reported. Residents in the area described hearing a loud noise that caused panic for a brief period late at night.
Police sources stated that no group has come forward to claim responsibility for the explosion so far. The absence of any claim has made it more challenging for investigators to immediately identify those behind the act.
Investigation Underway by Police and Forensic Teams
On Wednesday morning, teams from the police department along with forensic experts visited the site to collect evidence. The area was briefly cordoned off as investigators examined the scene for clues, including remnants of explosive materials and possible triggering mechanisms.

Political Reaction and Strong Condemnation
The incident drew sharp criticism from senior Congress leaders in the state. Keisham Meghachandra, who leads the Congress Legislature Party in Manipur, condemned the explosion and described it as deeply alarming.
In a public statement, Meghachandra expressed concern that such an incident could occur in what is considered a high-security zone. He questioned how a blast could take place in a civilian area that is expected to have strict security monitoring.
Questions Raised Over Law and Order Situation
Meghachandra emphasized that the occurrence of such an incident highlights potential gaps in the law-and-order system in Imphal. He urged authorities to treat the matter with urgency and seriousness.
The Congress leader also called for the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible. According to him, ensuring accountability is essential not only for justice but also for restoring public confidence in the security system.
Demand for Enhanced Security Measures
In his remarks, Meghachandra stressed that the government must take stronger steps to guarantee the safety of both political figures and ordinary citizens. He noted that incidents of this nature can create fear among the public and undermine trust in governance.
He further urged the administration to review existing security arrangements, especially in sensitive and high-profile areas, to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
