Rainfall – Maharashtra Braces for Intense Downpour as IMD Extends Weather Alerts
Rainfall – Heavy rain is expected to persist across several parts of Maharashtra over the next three days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting stronger rainfall activity because of two cyclonic circulations influencing the state’s weather. The department has also warned that gusty winds ranging between 50 kmph and 70 kmph could affect districts such as Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Nashik. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as the weather system is likely to bring periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms in several regions.
Red Alert Issued for Pune Ghat Region
The IMD has placed the ghat areas of Pune under a Red Alert, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations along with widespread heavy to very heavy showers. Such conditions could increase the risk of waterlogging, overflowing streams and disruption to road transport, particularly in hilly terrain. Local administrations are expected to closely monitor vulnerable locations and respond to any weather-related emergencies.
Orange Alert Covers Konkan and Western Maharashtra
An Orange Alert has been announced for Palghar, Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri in the Konkan belt. Similar warnings are in place for the ghat regions of Nashik, Satara and Kolhapur, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over the coming days. The IMD said these districts could witness prolonged spells of rain as moisture-rich weather systems continue to strengthen over western India.
Officials have advised people living in landslide-prone and flood-sensitive areas to remain alert, especially during periods of continuous rainfall.
Yellow Alert for Mumbai and Several Interior Districts
Mumbai is among the locations placed under a Yellow Alert, alongside Pune, Nashik, Buldhana, Akola, Washim, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli. The weather department has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over Mumbai and parts of the Vidarbha region.
Commuters have been advised to keep track of local weather updates, as brief but intense showers could affect traffic movement and daily travel across urban centres.
Rainfall Data Highlights Stronger Showers in Mumbai Suburbs
According to official rainfall observations, Mumbai’s western suburbs recorded the highest average rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Wednesday, receiving 64.91 mm of rain. The eastern suburbs followed with an average of 48.70 mm, while the island city registered 36.65 mm.
The figures indicate that rainfall was significantly heavier across suburban areas compared with the southern parts of the city, reflecting the uneven distribution often seen during active monsoon conditions.
Weather Systems Expected to Strengthen Rainfall
Meteorologists said rainfall intensity is likely to increase further over the next 24 hours because of low-pressure systems developing over parts of the country and nearby sea regions. The interaction of these weather systems with the existing cyclonic circulations is expected to enhance moisture inflow, resulting in widespread rainfall across Maharashtra.

Rainfall Deficit Continues in Some Districts
Although many parts of Maharashtra have received fresh rainfall in recent days, several districts are still recording below-normal seasonal precipitation. Areas such as Nandurbar in north Maharashtra and Hingoli in the Marathwada region continue to experience a rainfall deficit despite the latest spell of showers.
IMD official Dr. S. D. Sanap said Orange Alerts have also been issued for parts of Vidarbha and the Konkan region over the next four days, indicating the possibility of continued heavy rainfall as the monsoon remains active across the state.
