Inauguration and Leadership Presence

The 70 MW solar power facility at Dhubri was formally inaugurated by Himanta Biswa Sarma, marking a proud moment for Assam’s renewable energy sector. The event was also attended by Assam’s Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, along with senior officials from the energy sector. Their presence highlighted the strategic importance of the project for the state’s long-term power planning and development goals.

Project Allocation and Competitive Bidding Process

The Dhubri Solar Power Project was awarded to SJVN Green Energy Limited through a transparent tariff-based competitive bidding process. The project was officially allotted on February 16, 2023, at a tariff of 3.92 per unit, reflecting cost efficiency and commercial viability. This competitive approach ensured that the project aligned with national renewable energy policies while remaining financially sustainable for long-term operations.

Power Generation Capacity and Performance Outlook

Designed with a capacity of 70 MW, the Dhubri solar facility is expected to generate approximately 141 million units of electricity during its first year of operation. The project will operate at a capacity utilisation factor of around 23 percent, which is considered optimal for solar installations in the region. Over its planned operational life of 25 years, the project is projected to achieve a cumulative power generation of nearly 3,230 million units. This substantial output will play a key role in meeting Assam’s growing electricity demand through clean and renewable sources.

Role of Government Support and National Vision

According to Bhupender Gupta, the successful completion of the Dhubri project was made possible due to strong support from the Assam government and strategic guidance at the national level. He acknowledged the vision of Narendra Modi, who virtually laid the foundation stone of the project on March 4, 2024. The leadership and policy direction from the central government created a favorable environment for renewable energy investments in northeastern India.

Contribution to National Energy Security

The Dhubri Solar Power Project is not an isolated development but part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s energy security. Support from Union Ministers Manohar Lal and Pralhad Joshi has further reinforced the importance of such initiatives. Along with other SJVN projects in the region, the Dhubri facility will help diversify the national energy mix and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels.

Boost to Assam’s Renewable Energy Portfolio

Speaking on the project’s local impact, Ajay Kumar Sharma stated that the Dhubri solar plant will significantly strengthen Assam’s renewable energy portfolio. By supplying clean and green electricity, the project contributes directly to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable power generation. It also positions Assam as an emerging hub for renewable energy development in eastern India.

Employment Generation and Economic Impact

Beyond energy generation, the Dhubri Solar Power Project brings notable socio-economic benefits. The project is expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for local communities during both construction and operational phases. With engineering, procurement, and construction costs estimated at 367.44 crore, the investment has already contributed to local economic activity, skill development, and infrastructure growth in the Dhubri district.

A Landmark Project for the State

The Dhubri solar facility holds special significance as Assam’s first large-scale solar power project. Its successful implementation demonstrates the state’s readiness to adopt advanced renewable technologies and attract major investments in the clean energy sector. This project sets a strong foundation for future solar and renewable initiatives across Assam, encouraging further participation from public and private stakeholders.

Looking Ahead to a Sustainable Future

As Assam continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, projects like the Dhubri Solar Power Project will play a vital role in shaping a sustainable and resilient power ecosystem. The collaboration between state authorities, central leadership, and energy companies reflects a unified approach toward achieving long-term environmental and economic goals. This initiative stands as a clear example of how clean energy projects can drive development while protecting natural resources for future generations.
