Politics – Speaker Rathindra Bose Backs Modi’s North Bengal Development Vision

Politics –  West Bengal Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose on Sunday expressed confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plans for North Bengal would help address long-standing concerns related to development and regional neglect.

Speaker bose backs north bengal vision

Bose made the remarks during a visit to Cooch Behar, where he participated in a roadshow and later offered prayers at the historic Madan Mohan Temple. Speaking to reporters, the newly elected Speaker said North Bengal has often been described as a region that has not received adequate attention over the years, but added that the Centre’s current approach reflects a stronger focus on the area’s future growth.

Speaker Highlights Inclusive Development

According to Bose, efforts are being made to ensure balanced opportunities across the state, while special emphasis is also being placed on the progress of North Bengal. He stated that cooperation among different stakeholders would be important in turning the Prime Minister’s vision into reality.

The Speaker also noted that his constitutional responsibility is to maintain fairness and equal representation within the legislative assembly. At the same time, he said development initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, connectivity, and public welfare in North Bengal are expected to gain momentum in the coming years.

Modi’s Earlier Criticism of TMC Resurfaces

The discussion around North Bengal development has remained politically significant since previous West Bengal Assembly election campaigns. During those campaigns, Prime Minister Modi had sharply criticised the Trinamool Congress government over what he described as unequal allocation of resources.

The Prime Minister had alleged that substantial financial support had been directed toward madrasa-related spending while North Bengal did not receive adequate budgetary attention despite its large geographical and social importance. He also accused the ruling party of prioritising vote-bank politics instead of focusing on long-term regional development.

Concerns Over Disaster Response

Modi had earlier referred to the situation during heavy rainfall and flooding incidents in several North Bengal districts. He claimed the state government failed to respond effectively during difficult conditions faced by residents in affected areas.

The BJP leadership has repeatedly argued that North Bengal requires greater investment in roads, tourism, agriculture, tribal welfare, and employment opportunities. Political leaders from the party have also maintained that the region deserves a stronger voice in policy decisions due to its strategic and economic importance.

Bose Recently Elected Assembly Speaker

Rathindra Bose was recently elected as the Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly after being nominated by the ruling camp. His appointment came shortly after BJP MLA Tapas Roy served as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Assembly.

Bose represents the Coochbehar Dakshin constituency and secured victory in the election with a margin of more than 23,000 votes. He defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Avijit De Bhowmik in a closely watched contest that reflected the BJP’s continuing influence in parts of North Bengal.

Political Importance of North Bengal

North Bengal continues to play a crucial role in West Bengal politics due to its demographic diversity and electoral significance. The region includes several districts with strong tribal, rural, and border-area populations, making development and governance key political issues for all major parties.

Political observers believe infrastructure projects, public welfare initiatives, and regional representation are likely to remain central themes in future political debates involving North Bengal. Statements from senior leaders on both sides are expected to keep the focus on how development priorities are distributed across the state.
