West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday voiced serious concerns about what she described as a possible “understanding” between the Election Commission of India and certain opposition leaders, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and the Congress party. Her comments have sparked unease within the INDIA bloc, a coalition of parties formed to counter the BJP in upcoming elections.
Remarks Stir Debate Within Opposition Alliance
Speaking at an election rally in Nakashipara, Banerjee suggested that there may be an undisclosed alignment involving the Election Commission, the Congress, and the DMK leadership. The statement comes at a sensitive time, as multiple states prepare for assembly elections and opposition unity is seen as crucial.
Her remarks were unexpected, particularly given her generally cooperative relationship with Stalin in national politics. Both leaders have often been viewed as influential figures within the INDIA bloc, with discussions in the past even considering them as potential leaders of the alliance.
Concerns Over Electoral Roll Revision
Banerjee also reiterated her criticism of the Election Commission’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal. She alleged that names of several voters were being removed unfairly, suggesting that the process could be influenced by the central government.
According to her, the transfer of administrative officials from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu raises further questions. She pointed out that several senior IAS and IPS officers have been reassigned, implying that the pattern of transfers may not be routine.

This is not the first time Banerjee has raised such concerns. A day earlier, while addressing a rally in Samserganj, she questioned the relationship between the Election Commission and the DMK, though she did not directly name Stalin at that time.
Her decision to explicitly mention him during Monday’s speech has added a new dimension to the controversy. Political observers believe this could strain ties within the opposition alliance, especially at a time when coordination among partners is considered essential.
INDIA Bloc Faces Internal Strain
The INDIA bloc comprises over two dozen parties, including the Congress, DMK, CPI-M, and Trinamool Congress. While the alliance was formed to present a united front, Banerjee’s comments have highlighted underlying differences.

Referring to the Prime Minister’s recent rally in Cooch Behar, she questioned why he remained silent on the issue while actively addressing political matters in West Bengal. She went on to demand his resignation, accusing him of failing to address concerns related to national security.
