BJP Raises Questions Over DMK’s Internal Balance

Tamil Nadu BJP Vice President Jayaprakash reacted strongly to the development, cautioning the DMK leadership about possible internal repercussions. Speaking to ANI, he remarked that the party should remain vigilant about the changing composition of its ranks. He suggested that the DMK, once defined by its long-standing ideological battles, now risks being seen as a destination for former AIADMK leaders.

Jayaprakash further argued that the induction of O Panneerselvam could disturb the party’s traditional structure. According to him, those who had built their political careers opposing figures such as M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa may find the shift unsettling. He predicted that newer entrants could eventually reshape the leadership dynamics within the DMK.

Panneerselvam’s Move Marks Major Political Turn

O Panneerselvam, who had a prolonged and public leadership dispute with Edappadi K Palaniswami in 2022, was expelled from the AIADMK following internal conflict. His entry into the DMK took place in the presence of Chief Minister and party president M K Stalin, underscoring the political weight of the moment.

Adding to the significance, Panneerselvam’s son, P Ravindhranath Kumar, also joined the ruling party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The move is being closely watched by political observers who believe it could influence electoral calculations and voter alignments in the state.

The development comes at a time when political alliances and party loyalties are under scrutiny, with both major Dravidian parties preparing for future electoral contests.

Concerns Over Leadership Shifts Within DMK

Jayaprakash went further in his remarks, claiming that the inclusion of leaders from rival backgrounds might eventually change the power structure inside the DMK. He speculated that emerging figures could gain greater influence in the coming years.

While the DMK has not publicly responded to these claims, party insiders suggest that leadership decisions are strategic and aimed at strengthening the party’s electoral prospects. The ruling party has historically welcomed leaders from different political backgrounds, often framing such moves as efforts to broaden its support base.

Dissent Emerges Among OPS Loyalists

Not all reactions have been limited to rival parties. Within Panneerselvam’s own camp, the decision has triggered disappointment. Esadurai, a long-time supporter, described the move as emotionally difficult for many cadres who had stood by the former AIADMK leader during challenging times.

He recalled the legacy of M G Ramachandran, who founded the AIADMK in 1972 after breaking away from the DMK, and J Jayalalithaa, who later consolidated the party’s identity. According to Esadurai, many grassroots workers feel that the ideological journey that began with those leaders has taken an unexpected turn.

Supporters who backed Panneerselvam during his “Dharma Yuddham” campaign against internal rivals now feel uncertain about the future. Some have expressed concern that the decision may distance him from the core principles traditionally associated with the AIADMK.

A State Watching Closely

Tamil Nadu’s political arena has long been shaped by the rivalry between the DMK and the AIADMK. The movement of a senior leader like O Panneerselvam from one camp to another marks a notable chapter in that history.

As the state moves toward the next Assembly elections, political analysts say such shifts could influence campaign narratives and alliance strategies. Whether this realignment strengthens the DMK’s position or creates internal challenges remains to be seen. For now, the development has added a fresh layer of complexity to Tamil Nadu politics.
