Opposition Alliance – INDIA Bloc Faces Fresh Strains Amid Key Party Turmoil
Opposition Alliance – The Opposition’s INDIA alliance is confronting a challenging phase as internal disagreements and political uncertainties emerge within two of its major members, the DMK and the Trinamool Congress (TMC). These developments have raised fresh questions about the coalition’s ability to maintain cohesion ahead of crucial political battles.

The situation became more evident after the DMK announced that it would not participate in the INDIA bloc meeting scheduled for June 8. The party attributed its decision to growing dissatisfaction with the Congress, accusing its longtime ally of abandoning established political commitments following recent political developments in Tamil Nadu.
DMK Signals Discontent Over Congress Relationship
Tensions between the DMK and Congress have intensified after Congress decided to support the government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu. The move came after the DMK-led alliance suffered a setback in the state assembly elections, creating friction between the two parties that have traditionally worked together.
In a statement, the DMK clarified that while it would stay away from the upcoming alliance meeting, it would continue supporting discussions and initiatives related to national welfare and public interest issues raised by other Opposition parties.
Adding to the visible separation, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has approved the DMK’s request to sit independently from Congress in Parliament, further highlighting the widening gap between the former allies.
TMC Faces Internal Challenges
At the same time, the Trinamool Congress is dealing with its own political troubles. Although party chief Mamata Banerjee and senior leader Abhishek Banerjee are expected to attend the June 8 gathering, reports suggest growing unrest within the party’s ranks.
The concerns stem from a rebel group reportedly backed by 58 legislators that has claimed legitimacy as the “real” Trinamool Congress. Political observers have also noted speculation that several TMC lawmakers could be exploring alternative political options.
Sources indicate that a number of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members are reportedly in discussions with the BJP, while a few parliamentarians are also said to be maintaining communication with Congress leaders. Despite the uncertainty, the TMC continues to hold a significant presence in Parliament, remaining the third-largest party after the BJP and Congress with substantial representation in both Houses.
Delimitation Debate Adds Political Significance
The unfolding developments carry additional importance because of ongoing discussions surrounding the proposed delimitation exercise. Political circles are abuzz with speculation that the Union government may once again introduce a delimitation-related constitutional amendment during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Reports suggest that efforts have been made to engage both the DMK and TMC on the issue. During an earlier parliamentary session, an Opposition-backed attempt to block a constitutional amendment linking delimitation to the women’s reservation framework succeeded despite the NDA’s strong numbers in the Lok Sabha.
Given the parliamentary strength of both the DMK and TMC, their future political positioning could play a significant role in shaping the outcome of any such legislative proposal.
Opposition Leaders Seek Common Strategy
Senior Opposition leaders are expected to use the June 8 meeting to discuss a coordinated approach against the BJP-led government and explore ways to strengthen cooperation among alliance partners.
However, concerns about unity are not limited to the DMK and TMC. Leaders from other alliance constituents have also voiced reservations regarding Congress’s handling of relationships within the coalition.
A senior CPI(M) leader indicated that the party has not yet finalized its decision regarding participation in the meeting. The leader expressed dissatisfaction over Congress’s allegations suggesting an understanding between the BJP and CPI(M) in Kerala, arguing that such remarks undermine efforts to build broader Opposition coordination at the national level.
According to Opposition sources, several alliance members, including the Samajwadi Party and other regional partners, have raised concerns about Congress’s approach to alliance management and its commitment to previously agreed political arrangements. These issues are expected to feature prominently during discussions as the bloc attempts to preserve unity ahead of future political contests.
